Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

No special prep needed as long as the new paint color is close in color and value. If not, you may want to prime first.

One of the best glazes is Bella Fresco It is my personal favorite and yes it is a bit pricey but it spread forever and once you use it you will never buy anything else. You can order it from Chicago Institute of Fine Finishes fauxbykathy.com

When I did it it turns out he had us applying the dark color as the base and then the light color as glaze. Exactly opposit from what we wanted. Turned out plain nasty. Dark yellow with a light yellow haze. I went back pissed. 2 coats of BIN primer, 2 coats of base, and 1 coat of glaze wasted. $80 down the drain from bad advise. Im not a painter but wife wanted a new bathroom for x-mas. Should have saved the cash to pay a real painter.
That was a really bad color advice.
Yellow should be painted dark over light, as all warm colors.
If you turn it around, it can still look nice.
Patch it up with a white primer- it doesn't need to completely hide, just a white middle coat, then do some darker yellow on it.

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

No offense, but 'real' is a funny term when it comes to faux painting.
But, who am I. I never did any faux training, just jobs. I'm used to doing stuff the way I see fit.

All the best, Evelien

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

No I mean a real plaster finish. My business only does real veneer plaster finishes ( alog with lime washes). Meaning, that we don't put a glaze on a painted wall. Faux finishes are real finishes. But, faux means fake in French. The art of faux is to render real marble, gold or plaster with other products. If one is considering doing a faux job to render a plaster job, perhaps you should just do the plaster. Most faux artists also do real plaster.

Hi Betsy,
We haven't spoken before, but maybe I have a tip:
I didn't make my own, but I found out that the basis of machine-mixed light latex colors is a transparant substance. Every now and then, I buy a bucket of unmixed latex paint and use it for glazing.
Probably it's like in art painting, important not to not make paint with too much medium in it, to prevent it from cracking. (in this case, the medium would be the transparant latex)

With best regards, Evelien

I understand Polyvine's glaze has an incredible open time. Is that true anyone? I do use that Aqua stuff because , while expensive it is a safer bet.

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

Polyvine does have good open time. But then, most professional label glazes have stepped up their game to provide plenty of open time. Consider other qualities of the glaze you buy. i.e...is it exterior rated? durability factor, versatility of tinting, and of course price.
