Faux Finish Cover Up

ok my wife and I tried to do a faux finish useing glaze. We don't like the look and was woundering if any special prep was needed to paint over it with normal paint again. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks very much.

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

Let me guess....Behr glaze from HD??? If it was waterbase glaze, treat it like you would latex paint. If you got texture from it, sand it smooth before repainting. I would do a light quick sanding anyhow befor re-coating.

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

I wish I could blame the glaze. It was sherwin williams. Had good stuff just bad experiance. It has no texture. I walked in and said we want to do this ragging faux. The guy handed me the paint and told me to paint the wall with this gallon. Then mix this quart into the gallon of glaze. When I did it it turns out he had us applying the dark color as the base and then the light color as glaze. Exactly opposit from what we wanted. Turned out plain nasty. Dark yellow with a light yellow haze. I went back pissed. 2 coats of BIN primer, 2 coats of base, and 1 coat of glaze wasted. $80 down the drain from bad advise. Im not a painter but wife wanted a new bathroom for x-mas. Should have saved the cash to pay a real painter.

Always try your finish on a sample board first. It takes practice.

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

my thoughts too KB. SW, BM, and Behr are about the worst glazes on the market.

What is a good glaze then? Please don't say 'Aqua' I can't afford it.

Thank you,

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

We have used Adicolor and Modern Masters with success
but decorative is a small part of our business.
I am sure the faux specialists here will have their favourite

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

It depends on what I am using it for and the climate but I like Perfetto, Adicolor, Bella Fresco, Texturline. Sometimes make my own. And just because you asked not to, I won't say the other "A" word glaze.

You make your own latex glaze? How so if you don't mind my asking?

Re: Faux Finish Cover Up

I use zinser cover stain over anything nasty. With a slight sanding before, and between coats, it creates a nice bridge effect over anything with texture, doesn't smell all that pretty, and the headache you get sucks, but it works....

i LOVE to paint over NASTY a$$ HO faux jobs. I chuckle with delight. If the HO asks what I'm laughing about, I'm not shy, I actually tell them I'm glad they're covering this shameful cr@p up!

Hate to say it, but those clerks don't have a clue how to use the faux stuff.. they should have to take lessons before selling it...
