Wood Species

Does anyone do anything specific in determining wood species on a project? Sure - the obvious answer is to look for the stamp, but are there any tricks to figuring out a Douglas Fir - North, from a standard Douglas Fir South or a standard Douglas Fir?

It's supposed to be marked like you said, but even still, there are a few that will be in the pile that aren't labeled correctly.

The older I get the worse the lumber gets. So I usually find myself swearing all day at bent twisted and rough condition the lumber's in. (Sort of just like me now)

Re: Wood Species

I used to do antique furniture refinishing and can tell the difference between ash and oak and elm. Birch and maple, black walnut and butternut etc...
but between northern fir and southern? You've got me there. Any reason why you need to know other than curiousity?

Just set a ShooFly pie down between them. The Southern fir will bend away from the pie, while the Northern fir will bend towards it.
