Wood Shingles Repair?
My house has shingles (wood) throughout the exterior. Some of the shingles have fallen off, others have rotted. I need to do some repair and was wondering what i should be aware of before i start the repair. Things like what kind of nails to use and how to replace the shingles. Thanks for your time

Re: Wood Shingles Repair?
What I've found to be the hardest part, like asphalt roof shingles is removing just the ones you want and not tearing off the entire wall...I guess that goes without saying. The principles are the same as roofing.
Like roofing each shingle has two sets of nails. The second set is from the overlayed course. The way that works best for me is to use my flat bar, or chisel and split the shingles from the bottom so they break away from the nail and then pull the narrow strips out. Start at the highest course you're removing and work your way down. Keep a block plane handy for minor adjustments, and most suppliers carry galvanized siding nails, or we use "maze" nails. |

Re: Wood Shingles Repair?
Everyone has a trick for removing sections of wood shingles. They even make a useless tool called a shingle ripper for it. So far I have had the most success with a hacksaw believe it or not. Get the type that will allow you to point the blade forward. Loosen the shingles with a prybar and then slip blade behind and cut the nails or staples.
Next time I am faced with this task I am going to try using a reciprocating saw with a really long metal cutting blade in the same manner. That may work a lot faster. Or it could do some really quick damage. We will see. I know of no better or more elegant ways of removing them than that. Good Luck |
