Well, How Is It Guys?

How is the market for remodeling, where you live?

I know things slow down this time of year, but what does everyone have planned for the first couple of months of the new year?

Re: Well, How Is It Guys?

Two basement finishes and replacing a garage roof with storage trusses. January is mostly booked, but Feb.???? We'll see. For the last year and half my schedule has been booked 4-5 weeks out, sometimes less. Before, it was more 4-7 months. But hey, Louisiana and Mississippi overall economies passed us up here in Michigan about a year ago, after all the hurricane stuff. Speaks volumes. Lot of contractors leaving the business, but maybe that's a good thing for when things pick up again.

Re: Well, How Is It Guys?

Over all it is slow for home builders more so than remodelers. What we are seeing is many small builders trying to pick up remodeling work to keep the doors open. I have also heard from a couple of friends that they can't find anybody willing to work to replace their lost hispanic workers. Many of whom have gone back to their motherland for winter, or have left in the past few months due to random INS crackdowns in the area.

Amtrak to Florida, Texas, or Colorado seems to be the big hit.

Though only 10-20% of my business is remodels or new-additions , the market is fairly strong here ,including new homes.A lot of illegals have fled the area and from what I'm hearing there is quite a demand for roofers here.I enjoy my service work.Go in ,be the hero, get out!

DEAD for Christmas, no calls coming in. First time in 6 years that I don't have something scheduled when I finish the current project.

Re: Well, How Is It Guys?

It's dead at the moment, I have 2 small decks coming up, but that's it. No calls coming in, and I'm topping the search engines on my site....It's okay though, I worked for 6 months with only a few days off, so a little break, especially when it's as cold as it is, is a welcome break. Plus, it gives me time to do some of those back burner tasks that I've been meaning to do, only haven't had the time.

Re: Well, How Is It Guys?

The housing market is not expected to rebound until 2009. So i expect things will be slow for a while. How its going to affect every business is anyones guess. I'm sure a good portion will feel the pinch. I know a home builder who had plans on building 6 houses next to one another, only built one and its not selling. My other friend listed his newly built houses for 499,000 a couple months ago, highest offer yet was 437,000.
