Unsightly Penetrations

Hey guys its me again with another sob story about a sub. On a recent remodel with radiator heat alot of pipes were replaced, through walls and ceilings, and we had an agreement with the hvac guy that we would repair the plaster penetrations( trim block around the pipes). But he has penetrations thru wood base and flooring all over the house where a trim ring or eschuteon would cover them(typical), I have them in my house. The home owner noticed, but he (hvac guy) doesnt think he is responsible! There must be about 20 holes to do, am i catering too much to this guy by fixing his stuff, therefore he thinks he is not responsible for any kind of trim out?? I'm not the GC, just lead carpenter. Just wondering if anyone else deals with these kind of prima donas?? Not bashing hvac!!

Verbal, or written, and is that the precise wording? If so, you have him.

OTOH, if you use this guy regularly, he's good and charges a decent price, it might not pay to get into too much of an adversarial thing. The next guy might be a REAL clown with an unlimited supply of sawsall blades.

Whichever, at least you can vent here without getting much of an argument. We all have a couple of those t-shirts.

Re: Unsightly Penetrations

Well a agreement is a agreement But it seems like you are the only one that agrees? Most of the time my A/C / heat guy just runs the mechanicals . If there is a hole in the trim work I drill it . Plaster ? Ive never seen a HVAC that could spackle and plaster Not for me any way . If the pipe holes need to get covered the heat guys slide the suctions on and we make it look good when its trimmed . Some times fixing the walls take longer then the heat work . John

The holes in the plaster were the only ones we discussed fixing for him, because like you said in all truth hvac guys don't do that kinda thing. But all th holes in the trim and floor were existing and previously had trim rings on them. Whenever a plumber has exposed pipes under a bath sink he always puts a trim on the wall to cover the penetration, new or retrofit. I would expect the same from the heat guy. I think for him to expect me to do it is = to me expecting him to cut the hardwood around his roughed in floor registers while doing the floor. Idunno. The life of a carpenter.

I would not think a few scutcheons would be to much to ask . No one want to go the extra mile . John
