Tin Ceiling

I didn't see this posted before, so what about tin ceilings?

Have a request for one, sure, we are up for the challenge. Looks like about 30 sq feet in a bathroom (imagine that!).

I saw one recommendation to apply plywood to the ceiling first.

Any tin ceiling pros around?

Re: Tin Ceiling

Not I Mike, but I had a friend who had a house with it in the kitchen. He has since passed away so trying to ask him may be a tad hard to do. I would think some sort of plywood would be ideal so it can be fastened at any point.

Mike

There are lots of homes here with them. I have one to install in about 2 weeks about 150 sf will be my first time.

I demo'ed the drywall ceiling and put up 1/2 inch ply we are going back to install the ceiling when it comes in. I hope you get some good answers.

Re: Tin Ceiling

You should use 3/8 or 1/2 plywood as a base. Do a layout on paper first to see how the tin lands. Check out www.tinceiling .com has some good install advice. Don't use that plastic "tin ceiling" POS

Re: Tin Ceiling

Have done them with plywood
and with strapping (1X3's).
Plywood was easier.

Re: Tin Ceiling

I've only done one, about 4 years ago. This was a 10' plus ceiling that was lath and plaster. I tore all that out and installed 1/2" plywood over the entire ceiling first. Laid it out with chalklines just like doing a tile floor only upside down.
A drift punch is handy to drive the nail head home and not dent the surrounding tin. Touchup paint is a must for the nail heads that chip. Though it was my first and only, I was pleased with the results. Good tin snips a must. I worked off of a small scoffold which also made life easier.

Re: Tin Ceiling

I did my first one a few months ago. Put up a furring strip grid - in retrospect plywood would have been faster. The customer wanted the material from americantinceilings.com. The manufacturer wanted the panels brad nailed for their "nail up" product. I thought brad nailing seemed odd but followed the manufacturer and it went great- very fast and worked well.

I tried to post a pic but not enough posts yet.

Re: Tin Ceiling

So how many hours would you ball park for a 30 sq foot ceiling? 3-4 or like 8-10?

Re: Tin Ceiling

I'm a little on the slow side. A small ceiling like that, with just me working would eat up most of the day. Getting all the tools ready, layout, installing ply and tin, installing any type of crown, clean-up.
Were you planning on some kind of trim?

Re: Tin Ceiling

I was figuring a day to be safe, small areas often can take as long as a larger one with all the details still there and like said all the prep and break down. I don't know any details about the trim or pattern yet, we will probably just figure a day for now based on something typical and then see where the customer wants to go with this and adjust for a final commitment based on the final choices.

I did about 500 sq ft in about 10 hours but it was wide open - I would figure half a day for a bathroom.

Re: Tin Ceiling

Purchase a few more sections than needed. This stuff bends like crazy, so be extra careful with the corners and edges. Once you hit an edge and bend it, it's virtually impossible to bend it back so it's usable.

Re: Tin Ceiling

This is probably obvious, but sometimes the obvious gets overlooked: Quality tin panels have spots for the nails integrated into the design pattern so they fade into the background. Find 'em, use 'em, it looks much better.
