Re: $$ Tile Job Help

The least expensive way for the access door is to do it in tile with color matched caulk around the perimeter and leave em a map. John Bridge does a lot of those.

4200 is just about right there on my local sub rate for tile. I can't see how you could sub it out and make much.

On the skirt, you're going to have to frame in some support for that tub, aren't you? So just make a door and tile it. Or buy a nice prefab door.

As for the pricing, what with going to the ceiling, I figure a total sg footage of over 600 sg ft (not subtracting doors, windows) so at $4200 you're only making $7per ft? And I'm assuming he's supplying the tile? Even so, I wouldn't touch it for that, it looks more like a $15000 job to me.... just my opinion.

Re: $$ Tile Job Help

Those tub skirts are always more work than they look. The thing is not even framed in yet so you do not even know how your tile is going to lay out. Around here the pump and motor need to be accessible via a door with handle. The door can not be "screwed/caulked/mortared in". Tub surround and mud floor shower tile jobs are labor intensive---everybody wants them but most can not afford them. If you are already busy, then run from this one.

Re: $$ Tile Job Help

Many homeowners will try to "JEW" you down on your prices, Don't be sucked in by this. Don't forget that you are in business to STAY IN BUSINESS. Estimating is an art all by itself. If you know what the job will cost you, don't go low. Let the others(low-bidders) have it. Some homeowners want the lowest-price, some want quality, Normally speaking, They can't have both. A man that puts out high quality will normally spend a lil more time detailing the job out.You have to ask questions, get in their heads if you will, to determine thier objective.

Re: $$ Tile Job Help

He said labor only Nad, however, you wouldn't lay tile for $7 bucks a SF?

Holy smoke I must be behind the times.

Which is quicker to lay? 10sqft. of open floor or 10 sqft. of tub surround? Sqft. pricing is for the birds. It does not take into consideration the number of variables involved in remodeling/profit and overhead/delays. We are not working in a factory where we can put ouy x widgets a day. We are working on unique one of a kind projects. Price the job to make a profit, not to compete against jack-leg pricing.

Re: $$ Tile Job Help

Ok Gordo that makes good sense, however, lets take your example. That corner tub at 6 foot up the wall with cut I'd set out at around 70SF. Thats 490 bucks. I'll bet 2 fellas could do it in three hours. Come back the next day grout and clean up in another 2. I know half days cost but try to sell that to a GC in sub deal.

If there's 1 GC reading here that would be willing to pay 7 per SF to a tile sub please speak up now. Then offer me a job and prove me wrong.

Re: $$ Tile Job Help

Now think about this, he's got a whole bathroom to do. With a helper he could knock it out in three days without a sweat. Come back the forth clean and grout and walk out with a pretty good Paycheck.

Re: $$ Tile Job Help

Supply and demand my friend. He is busy, no need to kill yourself to bid on a job you do not need. I'd let the HO decide what type of shower door they want since they are playing GC.

It appears that you (dayspring) are religious. You should know that the man you worship is a JEW.
Keep your racism to yourself.

I am no Racist, nor am I very religious.
But using the word "Jew" in my opinion, is in poor taste.

Now if you describe the situation as if the customer was trying to make you "Drop your pants" on the price, then you only offend strippers. Who really cares about that eh?

Thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my life. Just because it exists does not make it right or acceptable.

We've been saying Tom R is an idiot for as long as I can remember; but by your logic you would not take offense to that.

For what it is worth I am not religious but think everyone should be treated with respect.
