Swanstone Ceiling Problem

Ok, just found a new discovery in a newly remodeled bathroom in my own home. I have Swanstone solid surface for the shower walls, as well as the CEILING over the shower area. The problem is that the piece used for the ceiling is not adhered anymore. This piece is 58" x 31".
Obviously, I need the piece re-adhered. My question is, what is the best adhesive product recommended for Swanstone when put on a ceiling? I'm sure that steam & moisture, not to mention the weight of the product alone, is causing this problem.

Any suggestions on how to repair this so it won't happen again?

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

we just recently used silestone brand product and although our pieces weren't as big as yours because they were just for trim and shelves and such, we just used a good quality thinset.
what did you bond the old piece to? sheetrock? or cement board?
i would think if you thinsetted the new piece to cement board on the ceiling, and braced it until it setup, that it wouldn't come back off.

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

remove old adheasive w/ putty knife and it wouldn't hurt to clean glue side of panel w/ MEK or at the least denatured alchol (spel chk). reset w 100% silicone, low oder if availiable. pre cut a 2x4 ceiling brace and leg to base for support during the drying time (overnight). remove brace and rebead or reinstall corners.

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

I'd use heavy duty construction adhesive or the poly stuff.

... and I would take quick showers for the first week.

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

The entire shower is Swanstone from floor to ceiling and I'm worried that the wall pieces (which are NOT pulling away from the wall) will have it be removed first. It looks like the ceiling piece was installed first. Therefore, the wall pieces are what's holding the ceiling piece up right now! The slab on the ceiling is bowing in the center where there is no support of any kind. (Scary.)

I'm beginning to think that the product is too weighty and was not a good choice for the ceiling.

Apgar, not sure whether the installer used sheetrock or cement board.
Hopefully he returns my phone call and comes out to fix it. I'll admit, I'm a little worried.

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

yeah, that is pretty heavy for a ceiling. I would bet that he attached it to just sheetrock and possibly that is bowed down along with the swanstone.
I'm sure the walls will have to be taken down first, sounds like this guy will be redoing the whole shower if he can't get that shower fixed.

patty maybe an overlay. just think about this : mechanically fasten existing matl w/ screws etc then an overlay. i've a million scraps and i think it would ups. gonna have to texture the existing panel first w/ 100 gr. what color?

The color is a gray-speckled color. Regarding the screw idea, would they show?

Hey godart,

In terms of materials, what kind of overlay do you mean? Are we talking solid surface or some other type of product?

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

I think he means to fasten what's currently sagging on the ceiling, and then put a new piece over top of that, using the correct setting material for the new swanstone.
maybe i'm wrong, but that's what i took of what he said.

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

thanks dan and thats correct. a new panel glued over existing after its been corrected w/ matching matl. removel of wall panels is sure to lead to breakage. patty is that a short ceiling in that shower? with an overlay you could even cut out the sag depending on its size, and a sheet of swanstone can run 300.00. which is why i'm telling you i've lots of scrap taking up space. rather give it away then throw it out.

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

This area used to house a full-size bathtub. When I gutted the bathroom, I had them rip out the tub entirely, including the soffit over the tub so now it is a full 8" ceiling without a soffit. Also, when I had the shower built entirely of Swanstone solid surface, I had them do build in a "seat" at one end. (I'd take a picture but I REALLY do not know how to get the photo onto the site. Computer-stupid-me! ) So, picture an area that formerly housed a tub and now just has a rectangular-shaped shower stall. The ceiling dimension is like I stated before, 31" x 58". Did I answer your question?

Ok, go dart, if the guy doesn't return my call and fix this, you want to coome out here and do the job?

Re: Swanstone Ceiling Problem

Here's the update, go dart. The guy that remodeled my bathroom is suppose to stop by tonight to take a look at the problem. I'll keep you posted as to his suggestions to correct this, ok? I'm curious to hear what his opinion is and to see if he is on the same page as you.

Where do you live anyways?

Patty,
Sounds like you're trying to create a ploy to lure TomR out to your abode to do a little repair work Speaking of TomR, is he missing in action again?

Go dart, you live a bit further than I had hoped.

The guy just left and said he would be back tomorrow morning to "fix" it. Not sure what he will do. He used the adhesive that was recommended and ssupplied by the same place my Swanstone came from. When I asked him what he thought of an overlay he crinkled his nose and nodded no . (I felt like saying, "Whatdya mean NO? Go dart friggin says YES! ) But, I didn't think he would appreciate me and my big mouth! So, we'll see what he does. He may, in fact, just reglue it and brace it up which, as we well know, will eventually result in the ssame problem, right? He did say that he would make a few calls and get a few other opinions. (Of course, I did inadvertently plug cctalk. Always recruiting new victims... )
I'll give you an update tomorrow after he "does his thang"!
But, thank you for so graciously offering your advice & help. And, thanks to everyone else who did, as well.

You know Joe, that is a very good question. I think he must be either VERY busy (which I know he is) or he went on vacation (which I doubt the little workaholic would do, right now. ) There has not been so much as a heartbeat from the TR-oublemaker (synonomous with Tom R) since Tuesday. I'm sure he'll resurface cuz sooner or later he will need his dose of humor & abuse from us!
