Stair And Banister Protection

I’d like to tap into the vast experience present here regarding the protection of stairs and banisters. The stairway I’m dealing with is open on both sides, has three risers up to a landing and then up to the second floor. Treads are risers are oak, the banisters are painted.

Thanks,
Charlie
