Smoked Glass Kitchen Backsplash

These are getting more and more popular in my area, I think it's because of all the interior decorating shows on TV nowadays. I've done every kind of backsplash that there is but never smoked glass. For all you guys that have done them, please let me know what you think.

We have done some colored glass backsplashes....but no smoked glass.

If you are installing any type of glass tile you must use a super-flex latex modified thinset....due to the expansion and contraction of the glass. If you use standard unmodified mortar, the glass tile may develop stress cracks/fissures. Do not use pre-mixed adhesives either.

Why shouldn't you use pre mixed adhesives?

As far as I know, you cannot get super-latex modified thinset that is pre-mixed.

Also, the big box adhesives will tend to yellow with age. May not make a difference with smoked glass......sure will with transparent glass, though.

Bottom line.....read tile manufacturers directions before install.

Do you have a link to smoked glass tile? I'd be interested to see it. I've done glass mosaics but never seen 'smoked glass tile'

I don't have a link, but H. Depot sells smoked glass tile. They have 4"x4"
6"x6" 3"x6" diamond shape and sheets of 5/8" tiles. Personally I don't care much for the look, especially considering the high cost but lots of people love it!
