Re: Shower Pan

Warner,

I've got three copper pans and two copper pots. The pots have lids. They've held up for 20 years.

I love copper pans as well (they are/were worth a lot of money at the scrap yard!!)

The main reason - the only ones I have ever seen were flat on the subfloor with a sloped base - when the water seeps into the mortar bed you are left with a nice bacteria factory!!

Currently, I have a tiled shower in a home that was built in the late 60's. What can I expect when I tear up the shower? What type of pan can I install? I plan on tiling the bathroom and shower. Thanks for any help.
Expect to replace the drain and the p-trap. I also recommend a fiberglass pan so you do not have future problems with leakage. And there maybe a small chance you will find some mold.

Ugh, I hate statements like this.. (Sorry dude)

There are unfortunately thousands of a$$holes out there claiming to be tile experts who put together poorly constructed showers... This gives the good guys a bad rap.

There are several great ways to build a tiled shower pan that will last. I prefer Kerdi... Gene likes Wedi... Do some research on products and techniques out there before making such a statement, eh?

Re: Shower Pan

FIBERGLASS PAN! I don't think I would recommend that to my worst enemy. At the very least try to recomend an acrylic pan.

I can't comment about your new install as I have never done one. however, over the years I have removed dozens and have never found one that wasn't leaking and/or horribly molded. unless this thing was constructed very recently using the finest methods I doubt you will find it usable.

Re: Shower Pan

Nothing will last longer than a properly tiled shower.

For that matter, any tile installation should last a "lifetime" - and should only be replaced when it gets out of date - not because it has failed.

Re: Shower Pan

Exactly. Personally, I've gotten pretty quick at the old 40 mil and sand/portland mix myself. I do like the Kerdi products, however - if only because they are easier to tile around. Shower pans don't have to be a nightmare, but a lot of people wing it and cause downstream problems for the next guy.

Between Cali & Florida, you have to wonder - is it the sun or the temperature of the ocean water
