I have installed a shower bench in the corner of my shower. The bench and the floor has been hot mopped.

How do i install tile up the face of the bench as well as on top of the bench over the hot mop. Do i use mortar up the side of the bench so the tile can stick? and if so how will i apply the mortar. do i need the small wire mesh in order to hold the mortar in place and keep it from sluffing down.
iirc that scenario was on the Contractors License Exam. Go back and review your test material.

This aint the east coast boys, were a little more advanced..

Thanks for your time, or should I say waste of it....

OH NO!! Hey Angus, it looks like us hacks have been uncovered!!

Maybe we should go to wherever Carey is from and learn how to hot mop - since he is so "advanced"

Re: Shower Bench That Has Benn Hot Mopped

that was sum gud readin!!!!

yep i had the same question...im not a DIY...but still nowhere near a true pro.

i wish socal didnt do hot hopping...my next shower im gonna try kerdi for sure.

but just for the sake of learning how would you guys deal with a hot mopped shower bench. i was told it needs to be floated with wall mud by the hot mop place. but whats the point of a tar membrane if you are gonna put a million staples through it to hold up the lath?

Yep hacks! And apparently, we're bad people too. I guess because you don't tell someone how to do their job (for free), we suck.
And I had no idea how "advanced" tar was.

Re: Shower Bench That Has Benn Hot Mopped

Hot Mopping is by far and away the BEST method for waterproofing a shower. So kudos for having done it. The only reason it's not as popular as in the past is cost. It's far more expensive then any modern alternative. I have a guy on staff who does it for me. Which is why i'm still willing to do it. If I didn't have him, I'd go the route of Scluter as others do. But for my piece of mind, hot-mopping is what I do for every development. And that's thousands of showers at this point.

In new construction, I suppose it'd be feasible. It's not worth the mess, fumes or the expense to do it in remodeling. PVC rubber pan liners and ditra work just as well, with a lot less mess; provided the contractor knows what they're doing.

Tiling showers can be tricky, contact a good tile guy.

What's with all the grammar cops?
