Router Template For Doors?

I'm about to install new doors (6 panel interior slabs), 25 of them in an old office. the old doors are already out, as are the hinge plates, etc. (replacing hardware too).

question: i'm sick of hand-mortising the hinges, etc. - isn't there a template you can use with your router to quickly, neatly, mortise out the hinge plates??

it seems like i've seen one in a magazine or something, but I looked at lowe's today with no luck.

anyone??

I purchased one of those I believe from Home Depot. Don't remember what I paid but the online price at "Porter Cable" was $26.99 plus $6.50 shipping. Their model number is 59370. Expensive considering its made of plastic. I would not rate the tool for continous duty but in a pinch, it will work for you for a while until you find one that is and will last.

However, check out http://pricecutter.com/product.asp?p...cd2=1180567826

Also look into the woodworkers forum, you should be able to get a location to purchase a contractors model.

This has been beat to death in a bunch of threads.

If you do a search on "hinge templates" you will find EVERYTHING you need to know, including why the plastic PC template stinks out loud.

In a pinched it helped me do about 20 doors, the new brass hinges were much thicker than the old ones so i bought that cheap template and had them done in no time, the steel bit was smokin by the time i was done but hey for 15 bucks and countless hours saved it was worth it.

I've used that plastic jig and it works in a pinch but the set up kills productivity. Try this instead. You'll look like a hero. Spendy but worth every penny on multiple door jobs.

Porter Cable model #59381.

Nothing beats the original porter cable that has been around since the 60's.

Re: Router Template For Doors?

For that many units, it is well worth a couple hundred dollars for the Bosch or PC multi-hinge templates. If they are all factory doors with the same hinge spacing you could easily do it with a plywood jig as suggested, for much less money. I chose the Bosch several years ago, because it could go from right to left hand just by flipping the stop levers, whereas the PC had to be reset to do this; maybe they have changed this by now, but be sure to ask. I use the plastic PC jig for the occassional couple of doors and it works great, but have never tried the plastic jigs as a multiple assembly.
