Question

Owen Corning Basement System

My first question is has anybody done these type of basements, are they as easy as they say or is it going to be another, I do alot of basements where you do the sheetrock walls, but never a system like this, looks good but, time is drastically cut down and it does look different when finished. On the other hand with moisture in basements this system cuts back the chance of mold and easily removed to access, I'm sure with all the knowledge in here somebody knows something. Thanks

My understanding is that they are franchise only deals.

If I may butt in:
Tell us everything.

Why not traditional basements?
How's the support?
How's the install?
How's the $$- going in, as well as ongoing?
How well does it sell in different markets?

In advance, thanks for your time! This issue had caught my eye as well.

Why not traditional basements?

-Those interested in the basement systems tend to be hooked on the quick install as well as the ease of removing and relpacing panels. The other huge factor is the mold and mildew resistance.

How's the support?

-Very good on both systems. Very problem free systems. *If the install was done correctly!*
Some installers attention to detail and carpentry skills suck.

How's the install?

-Support? It's actually installed directly to new stud walls with track systems. Owens Corning and Impressive each have their own patented tracks. I alone can install a 800 to 1000 sq ft basement in 8 to 9 days.

How's the $$- going in, as well as ongoing?

-I've done them for as little as 15k all the way up to 62k.

How well does it sell in different markets?

-I can't mention states and specifics but every new market for these guys have exploded very quickly.

In advance, thanks for your time! This issue had caught my eye as well.

" Hi there! We are looking for an experienced basement system installer to service Livingston and Oakland County Michigan. Is that you?"

What type of basements are you installing?

Like I said, I install Owens and Impressive. I also just finished sound control for a new high school on the west side of the state.

Re: Owen Corning Basement System

Right now in Michigan its slow. I have to work the jobs alone in order to make it worth it.

I've been asked by a few franchise owners to come to their states to install but thats my last resort.

I will keep you in mind when things pick up.

If you actually want to start installing the Owens Corning package, they require you to run down to Cornings facility in Ohio for a week of training.

I have thought about it as well. I think they work in exclusive territories. It may be hard to work in your area.

Someone mentioned costs? If you have the time read this long discussion on OCBS sales tactics from homeowners. It quite interesting. Installation sales price from $82/sf down to $23/sf.

Re: Owen Corning Basement System

the basement system is not hard to install .the system has tee's that are nailed/screwed on to concrete wall or furring it depends on the wall .the tees after being put on accept the 4 X 8 sheet of oc system .the main beam is either rocked /pined OD drop ceiling material the molding all snaps together but you have to like / be able to work with plastic moldings . the problem that we had in the beginning was starting enough to keep busy because of the inspection plumbers electrician ac men . not a bad product in NJ they go for about twice the price . The franchise is high i foget how much the anitial was they wanted but then its so much product every month .

Re: Owen Corning Basement System

I have looked into this system for my own basement. I just couldn't come up with a reason why to use it? I never got as far as pricing because I can get rock so cheap. From an engineering standpoint there doesn't seem to be much advantage except "maybe" the mold issue. You still have to have a support structure and room for mechanical systems, so it seems that the only thing being replaced is the rock which isn't that big of a deal.

Re: Owen Corning Basement System

Franchise costs for the two systems, Owens and Impressive, are very far apart.

Impressive sells for approximately $25,000, no royalties and no monthly minimum stock purchases. They just require you purchase stock directly through them.

Owens is approximately 5 times that, royalties and a commitment of approximately 1 semi trailer load per month per territory. $$$

The other huge differance here is the massive marketing budget backing Owens and its franchisees. From what I've seen, 1 franchisee started as an average size construction co. and jumped to almost $40M in five years, looking to break the $50M mark within the next 4 years.
Owens franchises will make you wealthy if you can afford the initial stat up. Start looking for those silent financial partners.
