Notching Method For Counter Support.

I need to add some top mount, recessed countertop supports (steel) to an existing finished half wall. What's your method to get these nice and perfectly level? I would like to leave the drywall on one side unscathed.

Right now I'm thinking multitool, rasp and chisel.

Thanks much.

Jig and router.

If I didn't care about drywall on one side, circular saw set to proper depth.
