Non UL Listed Steam Shower - Bad Idea?
We are doing a bathroom remodel for a client that wants a steam shower. Originally, we were going to custom build the shower but the owner has found one on line that she loves and subsequently ordered it. She calls me late last night to explain that the shower was not ETL (UL) listed and wanted to know if it was a problem.
I am aware of the testing and certification that UL (and after a bit of research ETL) does. However, I have never had an owner provide a product that was not certified by UL. Is this the use of this product a bad idea? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. |

I assume permits are being pulled? if so contact building dept and have a consult fom them on site with the unit and ask them if it is approved.

The inspector will probably have a problem with ETL. Inspectors aren't always familiar with other codes besides UL and some Canadian codes.

UL provides cover for your liability insurance with electrical products and for that it is important. Often though it is just the plug or transformer that is UL certified and not the appliance - like a hot tub for example.

If this unit was imported, especially from China, I would be very wary

Why take the chance. It sounds crapy looking on top of it. Custom ones look better. Ask the customer if its a chance shes willing to take. Tell her its not a chance you would be willing to take assuming you pride your work. Tell her you like to install proven quality items. If she insists tell your attorney and they could draw somthing up where the lady could sign off.
