Need Advice Installing An Entrance Door

Hi folks,
Being a painter, I was a dummy and decided to venture off into a carpenter's world and replace an old garage entrance door (from the 50's) with a pre-hung door. Well.....as you can imagine, it wasn't so easy; the studs surrounding the door are off-vertical by about 1" and the door, even if it's pre-hung...is not stable. I have no clue how to go about tru-up the door, shim it, and bolt it in. There's a lot of space between the door and studs (oh between 1/2 and 1" - depending upon the location).

Is there anybody out there who coule provide a good no-hassle fool-proof process for going about solving the issue? (perhaps hire a carpenter?).

Any comments are most welcome.
Pauly

You got it exactly correct. Hire a carpenter.

if there is enough room in the rough opening to put the prehung in there plumb...do that..
Plumb up the hing side of the door...nail it in place and also run one long screw through one of the hinge screw holes in each hinge into the framing behind it. then close the door and shim the rest of the jamb until the gap is good all around and nail all of that into place.

Hire a carpenter and paint the door and trim when it is finished.
