Laminate Flooring

I usually get 85 - 90% of the jobs I estimate but things are slow now with the economy the way it is. Anyway, I figured a job for this lady on installing some Laminate Flooring in most of her house. She has 607' of floor & I priced it at $2.19 @ ft' just labor, subfloor is ready for underlayment.
I talk to her a couple days later & she tells me that she has someone who is substantially cheaper & she is gonna get them to lay the floor for her. She failed to tell me how much cheaper they were than me. This kinda takes me by surprise because I think I am probably a lot cheaper than most are on per foot labor for this job.
What do y'all get per ft' for install? I know I'm not too high, am I? I'm just not used to getting underbid on a job to often & wanted to vent a little bit.

Re: Laminate Flooring

Someone probably just got the National Estimator book or something - it shows 1.56 with .06 additional for vapor or foam underlayment. That is of course with no OH or Profit factored in

Just remember that those that live by the price, generally die because of the price

Re: Laminate Flooring

I just today, put in 500 sq ft. cork floor, snap together type of course and it took about two hours with a helper, includung undercutting the door jamb and custom ripping the threshold to accept/ cover the edge of the floor.

So if I were to charge my homeowner $2.16 a square foot that would be, 500 X 2.16=$1080.

Of course I have built the entire cottage and the floor is a small extra
But JEEZ, $540 an hour

I think I will drop my GC licsense and be a floor guy, if my knees were better

Re: Laminate Flooring

I reckon I should have mentioned that the sq. ft. includes a Living Room, an "L" shaped hallway, two Bedrooms, three closets & ten doorways. HANDM, you the man, cause there ain't no way I could do this in two hours!
I guess according to SLSTech National Estimator book I may be a little high but I ain't never used anything like that. How do I find that, Google it? I just average out how long I think it will take me to complete the job, throw in my helper labor, OH & profit. That has worked for me so far.
I'm gonna check out this book you talk about, I'm curious now.

I just sent you a PM
FYI - be careful with those numbers - there are location factors that are required, they do not include Overhead or profit in the mix.

I can't always tell how long something is going to take - I have a good guess but I will occasionally see if my assumption is close to what the book says. There are quite a few numbers in there that are priced way to high, while others are way to low.

Don't doubt your system, Billing for that cutup room arrangement & misc work required is going to cost more than HANDM's job which sounds like 1 or 2 large wide open spaces.

And yeah, yours is waaaay cut up and the price is right there I've done a few like yours and they are not easy, especially if you are going to flow through into the bedrooms without thresholds.
