Kitchen Counter Tops

Anyone here make their own granite counter tops. I mean start from slab stone and cut the size , then cut the edge and polish them. Been thinking og getting into it doesnt seem like it would be that hard. Any info or insight would be great .

Sounds like cutting down trees to make your own lumber.

Do you mean for yourself or for customers? Shouldn't be impossible as long as you can get around the issues of the heaviness of the slabs and the mess of all the water.

If you want to do this for customers then be ready to spand mucho $$$$ for machinery / shop.

Re: Kitchen Counter Tops

There are too many reasons to not get involved with stone work like that. Weight, machinery, finishing, edging, laminating, adding steel support pins,etc.... You can't just cut that slab on your tile saw.

This truly is something that should be left to the people in the stone industry.

Besides, it's not a piece of plywood, if you pork the work on that slab you are going to have multiple issues:

Your gonna need the HO pick a new slab
Your gonna have to pay for the new slab
Your gonna have to store the heavy azz slab that you porked
And the list goes on and on and on and keeps getting heavier.

The fabricators at my supplier porked a countertop for me once, You should have seen all the shiat that hit the fan in fabrication office. It's no joke when you make a 1/8 or even a 1/16'' boo boo on stone counter tops.

But good luck if do decide to have at it.

Sorry, Iplant. No insult intended by stating the obvious. The prob. with the confuser is that the intended message or question isn't always clear to everyone.

Have you thought about concrete counter tops? Obviously not granite, but concrete counter customers and granite customers are usually not one in the same anyways.

Concrete counters are logistically much easier to accomplish than granite since the weight issues of granite slabs don't exist.

Hey i plant art,

First come up with a million dollars! The equipment alone will kill ya! Not to mention a truck with good shocks on it and, oh yeah....the latest air cleaning equipment for your shop area! Make that 2 million!
