Re: Just Curious, Anyone Having Issues Getting Building Permits?

The last one i picked up, I turned everything in right before Xmas week and i had my permit right after new years.
I think it depends on the township. If they think they are going to get their budgets cut or jobs outsourced they jerk you around so the mayor thinks they are really doing their job.

In my area, you walk in, pay the fee and get handed the permit. A brand new house takes one day. I have heard in other states 3 to 6 monthes is the norm for getting a permit.

rives junction MI, no email no fax have to drive all the way there just for a permit, come to find out its a generic form that i already have...

the county i live in, simple walk in fill out form and leave...then call the automated system to schedule inspection...

now ann arbor, that town is a joke.

No issues here at all. They are usually pretty quick. I've got about 6 or 7 with my name on them active right now.

They can tend to linger in plan check for a week or so sometimes on larger ones.

Shaken down? Never.

Well I guess Im not so lucky, Im in NJ. In Wash twp about 12 years ago they cleaned house and some went to jail for various reasons. Now its Gloucester Twp official going to jail, court etc... Winslow twp is a joke. they make you go to atco for permits and another town 25 minutes away for zoning. Dumbest thing I ever heard

Here residential additions/ remodel permits only take a couple hours. Half day max.

Building permits anywhere from a couple days to a week or so. Electrical and plumbing permits you can usually get at time of visit

Re: Just Curious, Anyone Having Issues Getting Building Permits?

It varies like crazy town to town. Depends on the scope, usually about a week for most towns. Some 2 weeks or more. One town I work in tells you they have 30 days to review, and they usually take most of that. But they are pretty good to work with. Another town takes 2 to 3 weeks. After which they give you a letter with a list of items they are missing or need to be added or questions to be addressed. So you go off and address all these things. And when you return with these items addressed, they redate your application, make you sign it... and start the whole process over again. And they are not nice to work with. Yeah, I've pretty much sworn off working in that town again. If I were to ever work there again, it would have to be for big $ and with a full set of architect and engineer plans. And no time deadlines. This town loves to hang you up. Stories I could tell you...

City of Boston, in and out in an hour. Then I worked in another town - they are part time, you can't make an inspection request by phone, you must go to the office and make written request, and the inspector is never in office. That's another town I have no desire to work in.

But they all use the same 5" thick State Code book.

California, depending what agency (s) you are dealing with & the size of the project usually is a real PITA....

Oregon, I can get a permit for a garage in about an hour. Same dam building I would build in Calif that would take weeks to get permitted.

A small residential addition takes about a day. I am told a house may take 2-5 days depending on work load.

NJ sucks. A million different inspectors all marching to the beat of their own drummers. One town will take three days, the neighboring town might take 3 months.

I have a set of plans in now for a steel-frame deck and I'm literally frightened as to what is going to happen. The last deck I did in this town over the summer took almost two months to get the plans--and it was a wood frame!

What is it down there? Back in the early 80's the inspector went to jail too. I believe that was Gloucester township. The state came in and took over and hired a contractor to correct all the code violations. I subbed off the gc on some of the work. What a joke that outfit was. I remember they had a construction trailer with no plumbing or porta potty and the secretary had to knock on the neighbors door when she had to use the bathroom

Re: Just Curious, Anyone Having Issues Getting Building Permits?

working alongside a project building a staircase in SF, CA right now. luckily i'm just doing some painting and unit flipping stuff, but i've been around to hear the details. one story staircase up to a unit on top of a house/converted apartment building. $1800 for the permit ($8k to do the actual building). city wants cal osha to get involved, osha (three times) said they didn't need to be involved, city finally got a clue and issued the permit after a few back and forths. now the engineer is saying that the piers need to be 7' deep, 16" wide and the landing needs to be 20" thick. looks like the builder is going to be bringing in a different engineer.
sometimes it's a shock that anything gets done in that city.

I am having a great time in the twp we are doing a basement in. Everyone in the office is nice, no hold ups and the inspectors have been great.
