Its Been A While...Funny Afternoon

Has anyone ever came across a toilet that was glued to the floor.....So im getting a house ready to go up for sale. I have to re-tile two of the bathrooms. The first one toilet and floor come out easily. The second one, well the toilet had been glued to the floor. I ended up taking the toilet out in 6 pieces.

Who in their right mind, looks at this toilet sitting there, and says im going to liquid nail this thing to the floor....

On a side note, my painters had a fun afternoon listening to me yell and throw tools around all afternoon.

Never had one set with glue. I have had a few set completely in tile grout. Those toilets need the same removal tool - 8 lb. sledge.

How interesting.

I was told that toilets (dunnies to them) are concreted to the floors in Australia.

I've seen them glued with silicone so well you'd think they were cemented in, but never seen liquid nails on one.

Re: Its Been A While...Funny Afternoon

The bathroom I'm remodeling now had the toilet screwed to the subfloor with long drywall screws. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why untill I got the toilet pulled up and found the mounting flange was rotated about 45 deg off.

Took one out that was lag bolted to the floor.

But the best one was the HO set the toilet in thin set before he installed the tile. He cut all the tile around the toilet with his knippers.

If the tile looked half way decent. You have to at least give him some credit for that...

Sounds like a homeowner or wanna be renovator too lazy or cheap or stupid to properly secure the toilet flange.

Re: Its Been A While...Funny Afternoon

I to have seen the 7-1/2 tubes of silicone method. That was a quick recip saw cut and the blade went in the dumpster with the toilet.

The best I ever ran into was a toilet that was set in place with mortar. After chipping that away, we found that the toilet was lined up over a series of cinder blocks that acted as a waste pipe and went down to an old cast iron pipe and elbow. We followed the cast iron out to an "improvised" septic system. A 55 gallon drum...what was left of it. I was going to follow the field drain but figured the crawler would take care of that.

We did a bath remod. not too long ago where the crapper was glued down. we asked the HO if they did this for some reason and she stated her hubby did one weeknd after it kept leaking. Asked if he replaced the wax ring( already knowing the answer) was told "whats that"?...it never surprises me some of the things people do on their own..

Re: Its Been A While...Funny Afternoon

Showed up Monday to finish up the drywall in the master bath that previously had the toilet flange 45 deg off and the HO said " you've got to fix the other bathroom first, there's a leak in the kitchen ceiling" Cut out the damaged drywall in the ceiling to find where the leak was coming from and saw that the other 2nd floor bathroom toilet was installed wrong also. Last remodeler had cut a 10" square out of the subfloor and just left a big hole. The toilet flange wasn't mounted to anything! When I pulled it apart, the wax ring wasn't even deformed as he'd installed a short one even though he'd added 1/2" backer board and tile underneith the toilet. The bad thing is I'm scheduled to gut and redo this entire bathroom as soon as the master bath is complete.

Take some pictures. Those type of pics are great for showing client's why, even when comparing apples to apples, it best to actually check the references before deciding on a contractor.
