Handicap Accesible Remodeling

I have seen an increase in Ho interested in making their homes more accessible. These people usually want to change out their 40 year bath tubs for 30 x 60 shower base for easier access in an out of the tub area. I usually recommend grab bars with these remodeling jobs.
Have you seen an increase in remodeling sales geared toward making HO more accessible in your markets?

Re: Handicap Accesible Remodeling

I sure have , I did one last year and one this year and getting ready to get started on a third one , I think its a great idea i think I'll do one of my bathrooms down the road . Good selling point if the couple are up in age and they'll be staying in the home and don't plan on moving again .
I've just started suggesting for some customers up in age when their faucets need to be changed out to replace them with the wrist blade type faucets for those with arthritis it makes it a lot easier on them another item is a handicap water closet and grab bars , I'm no carpenter but door knobs change outs are another area where it would be helpful to them .

I build them in on my specs as a matter of course. Typical is a 4 bedroom with an accessible one on the ground floor. 42" halls, 36" doors.

On my specs I'll do a roll in shower. Make the stall big enough and there's no need for a door or curtain.

On your shower conversions, move the controls to the sidewall away from the shower head. They don't need to put their head under the shower to turn it on and adjust the temp.

Cabins in the Smoky Mountains have been popping up faster than the Cudsew (sp?). Due to the lack of building code in the various counties jurisdiction ... you'll see every mannerism of building. My partner and I will be debuting a small development of ADA compliant cabins because of the very trend ya'll are seeing. Granted, we aren't quite sure we can do them to be able to put the ADA seal of approval on them but the inclusion of an interior or exterior elevator that accesses all floors, at least one roll-in shower on each floor and so on ... we hope it will do much to attract the attention of the less-mobile. The only criteria we are debating most is the cut-out kitchen countertops. Because most of these cabins are put on rental programs, we figure most who are wheelchair bound will likely travel with someone who isn't. What's your thoughts?

Re: Handicap Accesible Remodeling

I have had the opportunity to do handicapped accessible work. (lifts, chair swings etc) & always decline.
my father prior to retirement owned several
home health fixture companies. when I told him of the opportunities, he recommended that I pass on the work. reason being that I will be married to the product particularly if medi - ca pays for it.

Poolman;
Excellent point.

Full blown ADA work is thankless. Every time I bid on ADA work in my area I get mad.
We have to carry all the usual insurance, WC and on and on but then they take the unrealistic low bid from the hack because it fits their budget. Suddenly all that insurance crap isn't important to them anymore.
