Firestops

Hallo -
On one of my jobs I am doing a basment conversion just for storage. It is below grade, typical cement block foundation. I am framing a secondary wall just inside the paramter, basically just "framing" to hang the drywall to pretty the space up a bit.

My question is, while I wait for the framing inspection, will he make me put in firestops?

Since the wall only has sheerock on one side I am not creating any chimney effects, which the firestop is meant to counter act.

What do you guys think? Will he make me put the stops in anyway although they serve absolutely no pupose?

yes he will make you draftstop behind the top plate to concrete wall, if there aere any soffitts at the soffitt level is where you would draftstop.

Best way to do the top plate firestop is to snap your line for your playe, leaving maybe 1/2 to 1 inch clear. Cut a rip of plywood 4 inches wide and nail it up first, sliding it til it touches the block wall. Then nail up your 2x4 plate to the line. Won't matter that the plwood is short of the line, its only there to close up the gap behind the top plate.

5/8" drywall works also and a little cheaper than plywood. done the same way

just got done today with a basement bath draftstop and I like to use un faced insualtion and foam it in.

Here either, because fire blocking is part of the framing inspection. But Kev's inspectors are ahead of the curve because insulation is supposed to be inflammable.

They do make a firestop insulation that some Inspectors will allow,since it is used commercially for rated walls/ceilings.

thanks for all the replies guys .... in reading my initial post I realized I forgot to mention one important item: my secondary wall in set some 10" away from the foundation because we installed a perimeter drainage system. So there is all this open space behind my interior wall. I enclose a sketch.

Outstanding sketch. So you've got like what... 10" of open space between the foundation and the new frame? I hope that was done for amusement's sake.

Mcc ......... I believe my previous post explains it ...........

Anyway I had the inspection yesterday. He treated the entire space between the new wall and foundation as one space that needs firestops. He's ok with using 1/2 sheetrock which I had on site already.
