Exterior Door Installation

Not having the time nor experience to install exterior doors I contracted a company for this work. The project consist of replacing 2 exterior doors with new Therma-Tru fiberglass doors. The new doors are the same dimensions as the existing ones were. Another part of the project was to install a Neuma patio door where 2 windows were originally. I will be posting pictures of the installation of these doors and would like your opinions as for the quality of the installations. I paid a lot of money for this project and would expect quality work, but in my opinion that is not being delivered. Please understand that I am not bashing anyone, but I expect true craftsmanship with the money that is involved. The company promised this quality and says they will honor it.

The first door that was the Nuema patio door 6068 double hinged. As stated before this door was to replace 2 windows on an exterior wall (the outside is brick). The installer was told twice that there may be an electrical wire run under the windows and to check before the demo work. Too sum it up there was romex under the windows and the installer cut right through it. After he had cut throught the brick and made the opening, the wife ask "what are these holes in these to studs..?" The wife also stated that you could see wires cut flush with the studs. The guy cut through the wires and did not admit it. He even told the wife that he didn't know what those holes were. Electrical problem fixed on their nickle. Several other issues with the installation. The same installer was sent back out to lower the door (it was 3" above the carpet) and trim issues. Installation issues still exist with the door.

The pictures that are linked are of the front door installation ... again there are many problems here. The threshold work and the trim that was used. This door sits in an alcove and the exterior trim that was used is pressure treated wood .. why? Also, look at the threshold work on the interior.

Please I need your opinions on this installation.

Thank you....

Re: Exterior Door Installation

Its a shi**y install!

Probably one of the worst, I have seen!

Nothing else to add, I would let them know you are not happy and see what happens.

Oh, would you share what you paid for the install? You don't have to give an exact number just $50+-

Re: Exterior Door Installation

For my personal/company standards WE would NEVER leave something looking like that.

It comes down to what did you actually pay for, what does your contract say they are going to do?

I understand the PT under the sill, as its sitting on concrete, but PT all around?
Does it say in your contract that they are not responsible for finishing? We almost always use pre-primed materials and do a neat job caulking so that even though it needs to be painted, it doesn't shout I NEED TO BE PAINTED if you know what I mean.

finally id say the installer was a hack, the two things that stand out to me are the stripped screwed on the hinge, and the caulking not only all over the trim and walls, but smeared all over the threshold.

Also, did you let your house keeping go, or did the installer track in all those leaves? We normally leave the house cleaner than when we got there

Care to share how much you paid?

Re: Exterior Door Installation

My 14 year old could do better.
I hope there was a healthy allowance for caulking cause it looks like they used plenty. I wonder how long they will function properly? Do you use these doors everyday? If so I'd make them take em out and put them in right. Hope you didn't pay? them.

Re: Exterior Door Installation

Doors come in 2 forms at HD/Lowes : with frame & without frame. Probably, he chose/picked the one w/o frame, then tried to match old/bigger existing frame, then used PT wood to level out trim level around old/big frame? Still, it needs second white trim work around it. But did he finish/done/ran? Money Paid? or HO/No complain? So weirdo!! ...

Re: Exterior Door Installation

I wouldn't bother having the same guy re-do this work. It is beyond his ability to do trim work. Hire a pro to re-do it.

If you haven't paid the installer yet, tell him he'll have to wait for his money until you get a pro to do it right. The initial guy gets whats left of the initial price after paying a pro to do it right.

There wouldn't be any money left. He would have to end up paying me more money!

Something funny here? Notice the reveal between door and jamb is near perfect? Maybe one guy set the door, and someone else trim/caulk? Looks like 2x4's ripped in half for ext. trim... yuk.

Re: Exterior Door Installation

I've installed many of those Therma-Tru fiberglass units, and I'll have to say the assembly from the factory is not too hot, BUT!
That is one awful installation there. Were they using a miter saw or chainsaw? SAD, Just plum SAD.

Re: Exterior Door Installation

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will admit that I am very disappointed with the front door installation (not to mention the carport and patio doors installation) and have not signed off on the completion form.

The company I am dealing with has been in business for over 25 years and has been recommended by a few remodling talk show host. That's mainly what made me decide on going with this company in the first place. So far I am not impressed.

Here's a quote from their website.

Quote:
Houston, Texas Corporation, has been in business over 25 years. Winners of the 2006 and 2007 Better Business Bureau Awards For Excellence. A company you can trust for replacement windows and doors. We are the window and door company who offers a lifetime transferable warranty and background checked, factory trained installers. We have more experience and better selection as well as a lifetime assurance that your investment will be protected. So, if you are considering vinyl, aluminum, or wood replacement windows and doors or even storm windows, come see the company you can trust.
I've added another folder to "photobucket" called "carport door" so that you can see the installation on that door that was installed by the same guy. There are a few pics of the original insallation and a few pics of the rework that was done. The pics are named for 1st atempt etc. You'll also notice that there are a few more pics of the replaced trim. Still not to my standards.

There are pics of the patio door that I have not uploaded yet, which that installation is still not resolved. And you will love those pics. I will get those pics loaded tomorrow night.

Oh, by the way ... the guy that installed the doors told me he used to work for HD doing the same work. Man, I knew that was a "RED FLAG" and gave him the benefit of the doubt. Boy was I wrong.

Stay tuned for more pics and how this company will make true of their promise that they advertise.

Re: Exterior Door Installation

WOW LOL Looks like you saved the best for last, that carport door is even crappier than the first door you showed us. They really took the "improvement" out of "home improvement"

Bring on the patio door!! May I use your pics to show customers what the competition offers?
