Drywall Suspended Ceiling?

I'm doing a takeoff, and my specs are calling for a traditional framing system using a c-channel, and Furring (hat) channel. I have normally used actual drywall grid in the past to estimate, but this is calling fo a 4' o.c.e.w. The specs also call for a 3 5/8 20 guage stud as the c-runner. I would've thought some cold roll channel would work for that. I'm sure I will need to run my estimate off what the drawings call for.

Anyways, is there a basic formula I can use to calculate how much hat channel I will need compared to the c channel? I have 3474 sqr feet of gyp ceiling at 1753 linear feet of total grid running off of my Oncenter Takeoff software. How would I tell which direction each would run on my plans? My drawings don't seem to specify. It's aslo not a basic shaped celing. It happens to be for a mall space, and they like to get fancy.

I am a beginner at estimating materials. This would be my 4th project to work on.

Well, would the hat channel run the short distances of each area? Like lets say in hallways?

The drawings just show a grid where the gyp ceiling goes. There is a magnified section with the basic assembly, but it doesnt tell me how the actual channels align according to the overall layout / grid..

I've never installed what you are talking about. I've done similar work on walls where I utilized channels for drywall, but I've never applied that to a ceiling. I didn't even know that was possible.

I would definitely contact the manufacturer to those channels and get specs on how to properly install them. You can't do a bid if you don't even know how they are supposed to be put together.

The drawings are spec'n 3 5/8 20 guage studs as the c channel. and the some furring channel as the cross members. You can see the assmebly by googling armstrong traditional track & channel. I'm not allowed to post links yet..

Anyways, the answer to my question couldn't have been easier. Middle school math if even. The spec called for 4' on center each way which would mean that I would use about the same amount of linear footage for c-channel, and my furring channel. It really doensn't matter which one goes which way.. doh!
