Bath/shower Walls

I have a bathroom to fix that had one of the shower surrounds, the cheap plastic type, three piece. It buckled out and the drywall was set to the tub and had absorbed moisture and now gone. This is a second floor bath and is not going to be used much in the future save for the occasional guest.

This customer wants to do a master bath/bedroom remodel on the first floorand does not want to dump money into the second floor bath.

So the question is..... Can I just install a band of tile around the tub and drywall/paint the rest of the walls in the shower/bath? Is there any place that sells the old harvest gold surrounds? I really do not want to put in one of those surrounds. He also has a window smack in the middle of the tub wall. Can you dura rock /dry wall then paint right to the tub and expect it to hang in there, Which is what I would like to do at this point.

thanks.

Re: Bath/shower Walls

What do you mean by a 'band' of tile - just one 4" row of tiles topped by a row of edger, right above the tub lip?

What's the problem with doing a standard 5' high tile job (except for the window, got to love the window-almost-down-to-the-tub design). I find with a basic square or running-bond tile pattern, a full tub surround tile job doesn't take too long. A day to demo old wall and hang backerboard, a short day to tile, an hour to grout, a few more hours to caulk, clean, touch up. Is that beyond your customer's budget? If so, then how about saran wrap or tin foil and rubber cement?

Re: Bath/shower Walls

To your first question, yes.

I pushed them off to the tile and the plumbing supply and they are gathering prices on both a full tile ,with tiles to match their old harvest gold fixtures ,vs a price on new fixtures with the sawnstone or swan tub /shower surround.

They actually were thinking I might glue up the old cracked, dirty filthy surround ,but I said I wouldn't do that . That they knew it was comming down and the walls needed repair and a new surround would be needed.

They asked if I wanted any of that work and I said no.But if any of those people requested thatthey get a carpenter I would do that.

So I am just doing some other carpentry painting related things for them.

I was some sick of going over that crap with them.

Any way I took some advise from another poster as I posted this in the kitchen/bath forum.

I ran ,ran away
