Basement Cieling Ideas

I went to give an estimate for a basement finish today. HO doesnt want to spend the cash on a drop cieling and was asking if I could "paint the cieling" white or black. I guess it would look better than bare wood, but she has can lights already installed from the previous contractor that "didnt do cielings". I was thinking I would build some type of enclosure to hide the wires at least around the light. Any ideas of what type of paint to use? Have any of you ever done something like this before? I'm tempted to just tell her i'll board the cieling to make it look decent. Thanks in advance.

I have seen commercial projects with the exposed ceiling painted black but it was also 10' ceilings or higher. I would go with the sheetrock idea! It would brighten up that basement for sure!

Yea i would go with d- wall but if the H.O. is set on the open ceiling, spray (if you can) a flat black. it would hide and not draw attention. Dry fall flat black ask your Sherwin rep.

If you opt to go with her suggestion to paint it, I'd put something in writing that stipulates it's her decision, and any changes will result in extra charges. (If she ends up hating it, or disliking it, it'll be her penny to fix it).

I done one several years ago, It was all Rough Sawn lumber, it was heck to cover. Primed and sprayed two coats of SW white, back-brushing. It turned out ok, I guess.

You didn't say anything about the insulation in the floor above. I know you don't need it for heat/ac but you will for sound insullation.

Just came across this thread...what did you end up doing? Remodeling Magazine had a article on a similar problem/solution:
