This Is BAD For Us Demo Guys. What Do You Think?

This is bad for us DEMO guys. What do you think? I got this in my email, believe it or not.

How dare they try to stop progress . . . What do you think?

Don’t wait for the bulldozer to come to your neighborhood! Come to the Los Angeles Conservancy’s public workshop, LandmarkTHIS!, on April 8 to learn how to protect important historic and architecturally significant sites in your community by designating them as City landmarks.

We will provide you with the information you need to help preserve important buildings by nominating them for designation as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments. We can’t wait until the wrecking crew is at the front door before we try to stop a demolition – we need to be proactive by recognizing and designating sites that are important to our communities.

You can become part of a new wave of civic activists helping protect the buildings and sites – modern or not - that shape our lives and tell the city’s story. Please join the Los Angeles Conservancy for LandmarkTHIS!

LandmarkTHIS! participants will learn how to:

Identify potential historic resources
Conduct historical research
Write effective nominations
Take a nomination through the political process

We have a friend who lives in a house that is historical. It is just beautiful! It's on Ocean in Long Beach. They're not allowed to make any major changes to it. In the basement, there used too be a tunnel that went all the way to the beach for just in case they needed to escape during the war, it has been sealed off, and now is just a big door. The house is awesome!

Here in Coronado there is already in place a 'historical designation' process where you can get your home declared historic and then it can't be torn down or remodeled without staying in the same style. It was needed here because all of the old homes were being demolished by developers and the lots split with multiple (ugly) houses. Of course it would only be applicable when the house really is historic and wouldn't apply in most cities, i'm guessing?

I don't think there are many restoration contractors as fanatic as me.

However. There are just some buildings that have been left to rot to the point of no return. So when these groups of people get together to save these places, there should be rules in place that allow them to save the building as long as they can show that there are funds to maintain it for years to come. We have an historical society that wants to save the homestead of Ned Buntline here in the village. (look him up. He was sure a colorfull guy). But there are no funds to do anything with the building after they fix it.

That is called "demolition by neglect." Just leave the building to rot, and sooner or later you will get the OK to tear it down. A building will deteriorate fast if the roof is open, for example. Get water running through it and it will be ready for us guys to come in with our big hoes sooner than you think. LOL.
