Backsplash Tile Question
I'm a little new to tile and I have a question.
Friend of mine says his customer wants her kitchen backsplash tiled. Typical 18" high from counter to cabinets. There is an area in the corner that has a 45* wall. Though I haven't seen the kitchen yet and don't know what kind of tile she has picked out, can anyone give me some advice on dealing with this corner? Do I miter the ends of the tile at 22.5*, leave them square and keep the grout line at the appropriate thickness? I know they are going to ask how the corner is handled as they already asked my friend. Thanks, Rob

Re: Backsplash Tile Question
I'm no tile expert but I'd lay it out so the grout line is on the inside corners/seams and place/cut the tiles accordingly.

Re: Backsplash Tile Question
There is no need to cut the 22.5’s on them.
Think of it like this….Aesthetics. It would look sweet if it appeared that you didn’t have to rip any tiles down to make the corners work. If the wall is a focal point, spend some time on it. Get a layout that looks nice, try using a ‘dry bond’ and see how they lay out. Good Luck, I hope I helped. |

Re: Backsplash Tile Question
You mean the corner doesn't make a 90 degree, it makes a 45 degree?
If I follow you right you could bevel the edges that meet, because where they meet they are going to form a bigger space behind them then the grout line that shows. Beveling them would creat a grout line the same thickness from the front to back, hope that makes sense. Not beveling won't make much difference unless there is something about the tile that stops it from butting nicely. By the way, don't grout that corner (or any corner) use color matched caulk, for it is sure to crack with grout. |

Re: Backsplash Tile Question
I would make the front edges of the tile the right grout space and not worry about the back space being bigger...especially if you are using glazed tile I wouldn't want to sacrifice the factory finish if I didn't have to. I agree with Mike about the caulking.

Re: Backsplash Tile Question
Ditto what everyone else said--no need cut 22.5's, and definitely caulk the angles and wall joints. Also, if the HO isn't completely set on a design yet, suggest doing some sort of accent above the stove or other prominent area. I've found it really doesn't add too much in labor, and it gives a little wow factor--even if you're using a relatively cheap ceramic tile.
