Re: Average Time For Kitchen Remodels?
Jesus already.....
THIS IS WHY WRITTEN CONTRACTS AND PERMITS ARE NECESSARY. This was the wrong guy to do the job, regardless of licensing. How do I know this? Because YOU told me so: "The best is when I told him about a crooked tile and he told me that the tile spacers go in and that all you can do, the tile goes where it goes! Or when he ran ten gage wire for a 50 amp circuit." You said you don't think the job needed permits. Well my friend, if he's running 10GA for 50 AMP circuit, that requires a permit. And permits are there to make sure the correct gauge wire is run for each circuit....and to make sure there are enough circuits in the first place. See the correlation? Bottom line is the guy isn't qualified to do a lot of what he did, but your aunt allowed him to do the work. So I see the choices as this: * It was agreed to have an unqualified out of work contractor perform a kitchen remodel. PAY HIM! * Don't pay him what was verbally agreed on and burn that bridge. How you can justify reasonable payment after the fact is beyond me. It was already agreed that he would do the work hourly at $35. If there was an issue with his work ethics, that should have been brought up before, not afterward. Lesson learned?????????????????????????????

Re: Average Time For Kitchen Remodels?
The last person I would hire for a remodel would be some union hack who is collecting unemployment. Want to do him a big favor, call uncle sam and report his earnings, cause he probably won't!
My first question when hiring new guys - do you or did you belong to a union?? |

I asked for this log last week. He JUST called my aunt with the hours tonight but only read them to her. Now when I talked to him last he said he keeps all his hours in a notebook and showed me a new one that he must have just started. Said the other one was at HOME. Why does it take a week to come up with hours unless he was cooking some up? |

Ain't no one putting you down, or talking tough. Its just that the truth hurts, but it will set you free.

Re: Average Time For Kitchen Remodels?
Jeremy,
I was trying to be nice about this. But now you're attacking some of the members here. No one called YOU a hack, just the guy that performed the work. Lighten up! SO... The problem with these forums isn't everyone is a damn know it all yet can never seem to answer the actual question. The problem is guys posting stories about unqualified "contractors" performing shoddy work and then trying to defend it.

Re: Average Time For Kitchen Remodels?
Jeremy - sorry but you are the one acting like a punk now.
If you are not questioning your business acumen by now you should be. You wrote down so many red flags it is unbelievable. Then you basically excuse all the BS, flagrant evasion of the laws, etc... and wonder why you got shafted. If my business was located up there, simply based off this thread, I would never consider letting you sub a job from me. Oh as a quick side note, Gene does walk on water compared to your "Contractor" |

Re: Average Time For Kitchen Remodels?
Standard kitchen remodel including full gutting, minor structural changes, change of cabinet configuration and related mechanicals, etc. from demo day to close should be in the neighborhood of 6-7 weeks for a full time contractor with full time subs.
AS STATED BY POSTERS ABOVE-every job is unique and this is only an average. I'm guessing from the "union" hint, that this guy is a specialist in one trade only. I am also guessing that you are also in the trades. I am also guessing that this guy couldn't provide references as a GC that were verifiable, and if he did you didn't check them out. I am also guessing that there was no permit on this job, and I am also guessing that if all the above is true, you may have been better qualified to GC the job yourself. Don't worry, most everyone has fallen for a line or two and assumed that just because someone is good at one trade and says they have run jobs that they can GC a job. But honestly, he is making you look bad but I'm sure you know that.

Re: Average Time For Kitchen Remodels?
I just scanned through this thread so forgive me if this has been clearly stated. Maybe someone can give me a post # if it has.
Has there been a clear list of the scope of work this guy did for the 300 some hours? How many feet of cabinet? List the facts so I can help.
