Zimbio Using My Pictures

I don't know much about the intent of this Zimbio Site. They are using pictures of mine from supposedly from "Flkr" spelled wrong. Should I be concerned? Feedback? Pictures 1,2,4 are mine.

What are the free use terms of using Flickr?

If it were me--I wouldn't want my pictures put anywhere without my permission, especially to promote traffic and advertising revenue for someone else.

I'd be pissed if they weren't back linked and credited to me. How did you find this out?

A step in the direction of applying a water mark to your photos may help.

Most folks don't want unneeded trouble regardless of photo sharing rights and permissions. Send a cease and desist letter to them with a time frame. They're all over the www. Send it to an operational VP of the co. You'll have to search this out.

What do you have to loose ? At least you'll then have some comm with them and get some clarity as what to do next.

No need to create more of a problem than you're trying to fix. What would you do if you were in their shoes ?

Addl - Google some terms like "website using my pics w/o permission"

I clicked on each of the pictures on that page. Your three each have a link to your home page and the other 2 do not have any link. At least they have your home page listed once you view the pic. You drive additional traffic to your site.

I do like the idea of watermarking your photos, perhaps with our url in the corner.

Nice work by the way, I just finished a bath with the same style/design in the tile. It would be cool if your link was on the pic without having to click on it. I wouldn't have even thought about clicking on it if Atlremodeling hadn't of said something...good luck

Right click your pic. Click on Properties. Don't know if your pic is live from Flicker or a static copy ?

Take the current image and watermark, manipulate or replace it (my imagination is going now) with the same file path name. See what happens over a day or two.

I didn't notice the pictures were linked to my flickr site which has a link to my website, that's a plus. (thanks for noticing) I like the watermark idea. I guess the situation is an overall positive and will probably let it go.

I go one step beyond a watermark as put a slight, soft white edging in my images.

It's not clear on zimbio that they got these pics fom flikr because they say only at the bottom of the page. A little sneaky. They should have that at the top.

But all you guys have put up some very nice pictures of your work on the Internet.

It is not surprising that people have used them on their sites.

If you can put some kind of unobtrusive watermark (maybe something like 'Flikr - Bob's Remodeling') that prompts people to click through and give you can get some nice traffic and exposure to your site.

Maybe that will lead to people link to you and Google increasing your ranking.

Altering a photo/removing a watermark is illegal and against Flikr's TOS.

It is not the wild west anymore. You can sue, contact their hosting company and report them etc.

There isn't much
You need to make the watermark very intrusive. Like a big stamp in the middle of the picture, but see through. I hate those because it distracts from the picture. But they are very hard to eliminate. If you own your own website you can use JAVA to disable the rightclick mouse copy. But if you are smart enough you can just turn off your JAVA and use the right click copy anyway. You can make your pictures small and very compressed, but then no one will want to look at them.

They are probably violating the TOS of their hosting company in which case you can alert them as to what their customer is doing.

Using your pictures without your permission is a violation of the copyright laws plain and simple. It doesn't matter if they put a credit, add a link to your website or proclaim you the king of the world for the unauthorized use of your pictures.
