Wireless Internet
I live in a rural area where cable/dsl internet are not a available, I have alltel card and I want to let my 2 neighbors (kin) use my internet, which is slightly slower than DSL but blows dial up out of the water. The total length of our lots (needed wireless range) is about 500' My house is in the middle. Any idea how they could pick up a signal from my router? I have read about repeaters/range extenders anyone have any ideas/experience?
Thanks

Re: Wireless Internet
Belkin has a wireless universal range extender.
They run about 50 Bucks they are suppose to be good up to 1500 feet. I used on once on a job and it was good for about 800 feet from the job trailer to the house site. Its only 50 bucks not much to gamble if it works. Also you have to check what type of router you have I think it was a G router. additional persons using the internet on the same data card may slow down speeds dramatically depending on who is doing what |

Re: Wireless Internet
I know the new Belkin G routers are good for 1500 feet or so they say. Mine only reaches about 400' since it is mounted inside of my home.
If your kin downloads a bunch of movies they might exceed your monthly limits and you will risk your service--something to keep in mind. Also if they view sites that are not legal the IP will be traced to you.

Re: Wireless Internet
You could also try the Cantenna
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...38&dcaid=17902 If you are handy you can build one from a pringles or similar can. http://www.google.com/search?q=cante...ient=firefox-a Anything in the line of site between the two will reduce the signal. Walls, ducting, trees etc.

Re: Wireless Internet
My electrician gave me a roll of CAT5, told me to run the lines, call him and he would attach the ends. So now that I will only need one router, can I hardwire their computers to my router and set up a network through the router? Then go through the wizard and click share an internet connection. I have been reading is all of this possible? I also need to make sure that the connection is always hooked up and available. I hope this will be the case if the base computer is on.

There is a way to make one "Priority", YOURS! Remember that that is a LOOOOONG run for an Ethernet cable and the turnout will be somewhat poor for the "Branches". NOT your problem!!!

Re: Wireless Internet
My two cents, find a wireless hub that is directional. This would mean, since your house is in the middle, you will probably need two. One for each direction.
Seeing that your houses are combined 500' length, I'm guessing the longest span is about 250'. That's not too bad seeing that others are saying they got it to 400'. Maybe I'm over doing it with the directional. But I've seen directional antennas work much better for one direction rather than an omni-directional. Another tid-bit, if it has antenna, those babies need to be sticking up. Do not try to point them towards the neighbors house. This is a common mistake. Frequencies pulse off like a cylinder (think of radio towers, they stand up to cover the horizon.) |
