What Are They Doing Using My Pictures And Linking To My Site?

I was searching links to my site and came across this web page using my pictures and linking to my site on the right side of their page. Also some of the links go to Service Magic sites as well. What is up with this? Is this helping my site or hurting my site? Should I tell them to remove my images? I don't know what the situation is. Mark

What they are doing is called HOTLINK you can have them remove it if you can prove that its yours.If they aren't giving you credit for it. It's just like stealing from you.

Bottom line is Service Magic is using some kind of linking to my site to maybe gain SERP for themselves.

I used to have problems with things like this many years ago when I was working for a software company.

People would link to the images on our site in order to promote illegal copies of our software.

What I did was write some stuff that looked at the browsers referrer tag and if it did not match our own domain name, swap the image with one that was 5000x5000 pixels with text on it that said "You are illegally using this image".

Worked well.

Anyways, it may not be an option that you have with your service provider, but was still a fun hack to do.

change the image names on your site to break the hotlink. and make the corresponding change to your web site pages with those images. or move them to another directory

Don't do that, change the images to pictures of swear words or other offensive material and change the links on your site.

Links to your site, hotlinks that is, will boost your ranking on search engin pages. In Real Estate, angents and brokers place links to each others sites, usually in unaccessable or hard to find areas. The more people you have link to yor site, the higher the ranking on a search engine. In other words, You can achive a Top Ten raking without spending any money.

So unless they are stealing your content by calling it yours, don't worry about it. HOWEVER, you should trademark every image with a watermark. See your photo editor. Keep thumbnails as normal, but when you enlarge them...Your company name and web site should pop up.

I have this same problem there are a bunch of sites that do this to me but I also thought they helped my rankins so I left it alone. I burns me up a bit still though. But I rank reallllly high for some nice keywords

I found this post in the course of checking my backlinks, and found it interesting.

You mention the mis-use of some of your material. I was particularly interested since there is a reference and link to my site in your post.

I am unclear whether you are only referring to the first site you mentioned, or to the others as well, in terms of using your material. In your second post on 12-09-2007, 08:54 PM you refer to a link to my site, bathroom-remodeling-hints DOT com. I have looked at the page in question and can find no link to my site. I cannot think of any reason you would put my link up unless you thought I was responsible in some way.

The site you origianlly referred to may have changed over time, but as I say, I can find no link at this time, and I am not affiliated in any way. Perhaps you got my domain name in error, or without the hyphens.

All content on my site is original. The only other material or graphics are provided through vendors with permission. I do have an occasional link out to other sites, but they are just that, links. I do not use other people's material without permission.

I do , however thank you for the backlink. BTW you have a beautiful homepage. I hope you experience every success.

It is possible also, that they may have done you more good than harm.

Google will see it as spam and eventually ban the site from recognition. The links will make it look like the whole place is all about your site, which can then get you banned. This site may explain all the traffic you've been getting.

I might be off-base here, but I've been hanging with 'Domainers' lately and see what they're writing about this. It looks, at first glance, like you're paying for backlinks. As Google gets further along with their new indexing and eliminating parked pages ie; http://www.judgejudytv.com/, it will hurt domainers and others also.

Just my take, and DON'T take my comments as accusing you of anything.

It sounds like it is a construction related site linking to another constructon related site. And, it also has links to other construction related sites.

Unless he is misrepresenting ownership of the pictures, or using them in an inappropriate way . . . his linkage is probably very helpful.

I wondered if you ever got to the bottom of who was messing with you and your content? I just happened to be checking backlinks and stumbled onto this post.
It is really aggravating when you are the victim of theft, especially when we all work so hard on our sites. I am currently fighting this in regards to my articles being stolen wholesale. I think the main perp is in another country and has a gzillion crap sites.
I see you often in the search pages near my rankings, and I hope you are doing well.

I recently had an incident where photos from my web site were copied w/out permission and used on another web site. Even though my photos have a clearly defined copyright notice, they copied them.

Filed legal action against them, and their web site has been shut down. They asked my attorney the dumb question "are you seeking damages?" also.

Go figure...

Heres an idea i used in the past. Make an advertisement for your business. Save it on your server as the same name of the image that is being hijacked. Now, that site will be displaying an ad for your company, and most times they never see it or change it.
