Website Photos

I know how to check to see if the content (text) from my website is being used elsewhere, but need to know how I check for my pictures.

Anyone know? I have had a lot of google searches for "gifs" and want to make sure that my photos aren't being stolen.

Thanks for the help...

Why do you care, and what are you going to do to the picture thief when you catch him?

Why do I care? Because I put a lot of hard work into it and its my content. Are you saying that you could care less if anyone stole content from your site and claimed it as their own?

Maybe I will just borrow some from your site....

No kidding. Of course he should care if someone is stealing content. Not only is he stealing the tangible item that is his photo, but he is also passing off someone else's work as his own. Total BS. I'm not 100% sure, but maybe you can cut your photos "properties" and paste it into google, and his "properties" might have similar text as yours did on your webpage?

You will not be able to find anything on google unless you stumble upon it.

What I would do, is watermark each image with your logo.

Re: Website Photos

Good idea to watermark!

Plus...you need to place your copyright notice on each page containing any original work. Make sure that it is visible at the top for everyone to see.

It is also within anyones legal right to download your pictures from off your website....as long as they are only using them for non commercial purposes. It is wrong to take someone elses original work and use it as a basis or an idea to perform your own work...for example say a customer brings you a picture from a magazine and asks you to make thier bathroom look identical to the photo...wrong...can't do that. Now say they make a comment on the photo that they like the way the bathroom looks...well then you can accomodate their tastes in a design you originate without copying any part of the photo.

Re: Website Photos

The use of a copyright notice is no longer required under U.S. law, although it is often beneficial. (read more from copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html )

Also I agree, the best way to protect your photos is a water mark. Any other method can be compromised with a simple screen capture.

Re: Website Photos

if you think someone is leaching photos off of your server, i would change the photo to something obscure. Then change the names and update the photos on your site.

Re: Website Photos

Its unlikely that they are not hosting on thier own site. Changing the image would only work if the thief is just using a link to an image on your site. Anyone that does that is an idiot though.

Re: Website Photos

Posting an image in your site that is hosted on another site is called hotlinking.

Re: Website Photos

digimarc.com offers digital watermarking and it can even report to you if someone is using your pictures elsewhere. it looks pricey but it's an option for some.
