Want A Tablet Pc For The Shop Area

Trying to research a tablet pc for the stair shop area. It'd be nice to view an always updated schedule of jobs and create tasks for these jobs appropriately and check them off when they're done. Office would be able to see what we're working on, what's done, and what still needs to be done

Something that you could draw freehand on, type on (would be like the iphone I'm guessing with touchscreen keyboard), and almost use as a regular pc... search the web, use programs like excel.

Keep in mind this is for a shop area so it would need to either be built to withstand some bumps or be able to be enclosed in something protective. ****Saw dust resistance is a must**** can never forget that part.

Bigger plus if it's a screen that disconnects from a keyboard like a laptop/tablet combo.

Does anyone use or have seen something that could do the job?

Re: Want A Tablet Pc For The Shop Area

I have used a Motion Computing tablet for 2 years. I am looking to get back to a full size laptop with 2-3 gigs of memory.

Want to trade? I have a detachable keyboard/cover, external CD drive, a stand that can be hooked up to a full size keyboard, monitor, printer and server to auto downlaod or upload any change's, etc. Lots of good stuff.

I use it in the field, but I am in a truck all the time and writing, instead of typing, is a little inconvenient now that I am much busier (too hard to try to put the keyboard on my lap).

If you're interested, I will send a picture. These things originally are about $3000.00. I am thinking a $600-700 laptop, maybe even less if it had a decent hard drive and a lot of memory.

Just a thought. You can PM or email chuck@yourhandymansite.com

Do you think it would hold up to a shop atmosphere? The dust, occasional bumps, and maybe a coffee spill?

Yep they sell cases for them called bump cases nylon with padding or abs plastic. I drop mine once a week no problem I will try to post pics of it in the case.

The hard drive freezes and shuts down for about an hour then boots back up. I have both I just keep em in the truck based on what I am doing

Re: Want A Tablet Pc For The Shop Area

look for multi touch. Most but not all of the current generation are single touch. I know HP makes multi touch, I'm uncertain of the others.

Currently multi-touch requires running inside a third-party application and not all applications will work with this. The next generation of windows has multi-touch built into the operating system so all software should work with it.

The netbooks will soon offer touch screens. I hope they can keep them at a good price point because then you could buy a couple and have backups.
