Question

Which Version Of Quickbooks?

Hey guys and gals,
I have searched the previous posts but not much info on what I am looking for. I have been doing all of my office work freehand and in the ol' noggen but want to be more efficient than before. I see many here use quickbooks and seem to be happy. I am looking for a version that will fit my current needs and maybe a little more in case I need it in the future(or just upgrade later). I do not have any full time employees other than myself. I have a part time guy sometimes. I also do not sub out work but I think I will soon. i am looking for something to store all my contacts, expenses(ins, mats, vehics, ect) From what I have seen the "pro looks prety serious, for the guys with large companies. I see there is a "simple start" version as well. I am thinking the simple start is the way to go for now but I wanted some input from users. What are the pros and cons to these versions?

Re: Which Version Of Quickbooks?

I would recommend going with the contractor edition. As I recall there was something about pricing items or something like that, the more simple versions didn't support that option.

It costs $300.00 at Sams or Costco. It maybe overkill in the beginning but you will grow into it. I have the 2006 version and I am waiting for the 2008 ver. to come out and see what features it has.

I went from a one man band to 11 guys and gals in the field and 3 in the office in the span of 1 year. We are at a point where we are deciding if we are going to stay with QB or go with something more. For ease of use QB is hard to beat and the interface is very polished.

Good luck

Re: Which Version Of Quickbooks?

I agree with tonkadad that it is very easy to use, I bought the contractor edition as well, but for me, it was sort of overkill. It was probably more than I needed, but for the price difference at the time and rebates, I opted for the better edition.

It's too bad that they don't offer upgrade pricing for their loyal users anymore, they kind of forgot about customer loyalty issues. They claim that they reduce the price so everyone saves, but I don't think too many people really believe that.

I used to upgrade with every new major release, but I haven't since 2003 because what I have now does everything I need it to do. For a hundred bucks or so for an upgrade, I would go for that, but to pay the $300+ or so for a full edition, (the same as someone that hasn't been using QuiclBooks for 10+ years.) Not gonna happen.

Dont laugh....
I use a from the early 90's.
It dose the job, a few bells and whistles would be nice. it doesn't interact with the internet.

I use the 2007 Contractor edition and would recommend it for ease of use. I'd defiantly opt for the contractor edition over the basic as it allows you to job costing, a feature that is not available in the basic version. Also it now allows the tracking of subcontractor insurance certificates. As far as upgrades, I just upgrade every couple of years instead of every year unless there is a major new feature that I want.
