Re: Router Security ???

Need to set it up for secure password. If you do not, you will be giving everyone on the block free internet like me!

Try this.

Glad it worked, I can not access it either. But mine is already security enabled.

Re: Router Security ???

Any router is 192.168.1.1. That address typed in the address bar will get you in. The rest is easy.

Linksys default user is left blank. The default password is "admin".

Re: Router Security ???

I used Linksys routers before and find the information available at :

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper

Very Helpful.

Good Luck

Yes, a router is a dangerous tool and should be secured. If a child got a hold of it, he or she could hurt themself.

No it's not. There have been many that use 192.168.10.1 and other variants of non-routable IP addresses.

However the easiest way to find out the IP address of the router would be to go to a command line in Windows, type 'ipconfig' and see what the Gateway address is.

this is where I was having problems, now correct me if I'm wrong, cause I'm not a network/tech savvy dude, but last time I had this router hooked up and secure was when I dumped comcast for fios (sometime late '06). Now when I got the login window I tried "admin" "password" deal and couldn't get it, then I started trying every combination of name/password that I could muster and it finnally worked. from the last time I used this router and set up the secure network, till now, do these changes remain internal indefinitely??? weird, either way I got it secure, get better signal strength than the verizon "house" router anyway, thanx

Try that. If not, I found that Lynksys is very proud of their product and will assist with setting you up. Can not remember the phone number, maybe google "Contact Lynksys" for it.

Re: Router Security ???

I had a Linksys router go bad a few weeks back. I was so glad. I had secured that network, and with four computers, it was the biggest PITA when I had to reset stuff. This time I didn't bother securing it.

Of course, four of the eight houses on my street are empty...

That may be fine, or so I thought untill my DSL was like using that ancient 56k dial up. I could not figure out why untill my neighbors son and his friend came over and asked if I knew what happened to the internet connection called "Tower" I think it was. After talking to them I realized they were standing outside their house with a wirless laptop using my internet!

Yes, they can remain indefinately. There is a thingy called an eprom in there where that information is stored. When you change it, it writes it there.

You can do a hard "reset" on the router and have it dump that and go back to default if required. Its a good idea to keep the user and password something simple to remember since you will use it so infrequently.

Yeah, I've got cable and two teenagers at home, and even they can't slow it down. If I noticed we were being piggybacked and it was obnoxious, I'd do something. But there is only one house close enough to piggyback me, and they're a retired couple. I just don't see it happening.

I've piggybacked wireless networks from time to time. If I'm out of town and need a signal, I pull into a hotel parking lot. Most of them have unsecured networks these days. Ideally I'd like to see an umbrella of wireless everywhere, but it's going to have to get really cheap for that to be feasible.

Re: Router Security ???

Here's a good article walking you through the basic steps to setting up a wireless router.
If you want security make sure your router supports, and is set to, the newer protocol WPA. The older version WEP takes 13min. (at the longest) to hack the password.

I've left my networks open before without any issues. But there is always the chance someone is using your connection to download illegal material that would come back as an IP address listed to you. While it's nice to enable access to a passerby or neighbor, it's not without some risk.
