Remote Data Backup
Anyone using a remote data backup service? My area is going through a rash of break-ins and it's started me thinking about backing up to a remote location. if anyone broke into my home office they could make-off pretty easily with all my critical data. It's all on disc drives and removable discs that are stored on-site.

Re: Remote Data Backup
Well, I would certainly look into remote backup for convenience, however, that is never a good substitute for regular removable storage backups which are then removed from site. Apart from the theft aspect, there are fires etc. Its a lot quicker to restore data from CD, Tape or other removeable storage than to restore from a remote location. Of course, a real backup also allows for full system restoration in the event of a disk crash....
At the compay I work for, both my servers have tapes that are removed every day from site. I can have the system back to full opperation inside 4 hours if I have to. I realise this is not quite your situation but the same rules apply. You really would do better to take the backups off site with you..... Hope this helps. Paul |

Re: Remote Data Backup
I back-up data regularly to CD's, Zip Drives and an internal partition disk. I'm researching disk mirroring applications now and I'm down to choosing between Norton Ghost 10 and Acronis True Image 9.0. si I can do comprehensive system backups. I have a number of external hard drives, one of which I'll use to store a mirror image of My Computer.

Re: Remote Data Backup
Years back when I used to host websites and rented a dedicated server, this was a service that I offered. I worked with a software called handy backup which would automatically scan your hard drive for new or recently edited files, then zip them, and upload them to your internet server. This was good money for me since I was charging WAY more for the backup space than I was for webspace and the user only needed an FTP account, which takes damned near no time to adminster.
Anyways, that has nothing to do with your question other than the fact that if you have extra space on your webserver you don't need to pay anyone any more money, just get the software utility.
