RE: Cookies

What is the purpose of "cookies"...no, not the one's you eat! The one's that someone told me to "delete" periodically from my computer. Second question: How do I go about accessing them to delete them?

I told you I was kinda simple!

Re: RE: Cookies

I'll answer the second part:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options, then there's a button right in the middle that says "delete cookies".

As for their purpose, (I'm sure someone will correct me), but I THINK everytime you go to a website a set of settings is loaded to your hard drive to allow faster loading the next time you visit the site. Over time your computer will amast quite a collection of these cookies and they should be deleted to help keep the computer working at highest performance.

Re: RE: Cookies

Hi Patty,

Cookies are used by web browsers in a couple of ways. They 'remember' information that you used, such as login info for websites and preferences and also they gather info for invasive websites about your habits on the net. It is always a good idea to delete them periodically and to do this in Internet Explorer, you need to go to: Tools; Internet Options in IE and in the seond pane of the general tab, Temporary Internet Files, there is a button to delete cookies and Delete Files. It is a good idea to delete files from time to time as well as they can slow things down somewhat. Please make sure you make a note of all your website logins and so forth as deleting cookies will force you to re-enter them!

I hope this helps.

Paul

Re: RE: Cookies

Yea, you need to have cookies enabled to use this site. When you log in to contractortalk.com a cookie is placed on your PC that proves you are Patty. Then when you come back to the site you don't have to log back in.

Its not a bad idea to delete them every now and then though.

Re: RE: Cookies

I deleted my cookies and cleaned the disc and something seemed to work as far as quicker response on my computer. I really want to thank all of you for the great advice re: computers. And I really do write this stuff down and try what you suggest. You've all been very helpful...not to mention giving me an education in Computers 101! Thanks!

Cookies are critical for sites like this one..

Do be advised however that some cookies have connections to spyware / adware.

Its a very good idea to kill the cookies every few days.

Re: RE: Cookies

Go to this site and get the Freeware "Cleanup" program.
Use it regularly and the performance of your computer should improve for you.
