Parked Domains

I wanted to know what people think about parked domain names. I have several domain names that are industry specific with Iowa in their names. How difficult is it to build a search engine position with those names pointing to your companies name?

Do you need an actual website at each of those domains to really get index'd?

You can get listed with just a parked page, but remember search engies usually spider text meaning if you have nothing there you probably will have the worst rank possible, if you get listed at all. That's just making everything over simplified.
