Norton Protection

I have been using Norton protection on my computers for several years now with not much to complain about but recently Norton sent a notice that it was time to upgrade. So I did. Everything went well, but when it was over there was a message that Norton no longer offered popup protection. I had forgotten how nice it was not to see all that stuff. I get all kinds of popups now. Any suggestions for alternatives out there?

Re: Norton Protection

The mozilla clones (Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox, thunderbird, seamonkey, etc)all pretty much have pop-up blockers in them.

You can also install an add-on called "Ad-blocker" which blocks the ads right on the pages (for mozilla clones)

Here is a link to mozilla clones: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/

(I use the word "clone" very generically here)

Agreed - Firefox is generaly safer, mostly because it does not support active x natively. Also there are many useful addons, which you can choose to install or keep it light and quick.

Internet Explorer 7 is much improved also.

Thats wierd, I have Norton 360 on all three computers with no problem with pop-ups at all. I browse using IE7 mostly. Something on our 'puters have a blocker no doubt. IE7 has one, just looked.

Had Norton, Had McCaffy, got worms and viruses with both. I run "Stop Sign" now and love it. 2 years, no worms, no viruses, and it has spam blocker, and popup blocker. With the first 2, I went through 4 home pc's, Crashed them behond repair. oh by the way at that time I also was using AOL as my server. I got rid of that and got Peoplepc for a server now and havent had any trouble since.

Had to have been the AV software - not the BS AOL product

Much of these issues become non-events when you use a browser OTHER than MSIE. (Which is part of the AOL package).

...you also might consider changing your browsing habits ....

Re: Norton Protection

You want a good AV your get NOD32. You want a good security suite, you get Kaspersky. Firefox, AdBlock Plus, and NoScript all help quite a bit as well. And there are several free anti-spyware apps like Spyware Blaster and Super Anti Spyware that do an excellent job.

Re: Norton Protection

First: on topic - A vote for Opera browser here. Stops pop-ups also. And I prefer it a little over Firefox - but each to their own. Gotta love all the options available.

Second: to veer a bit. Few years ago, Norton failed me miserably. Allowed MyDoom to reek havac. Have gone with Grissoft's AVG Free. So far so good.
