Multi-function Color Laser

We need to replace our 3 year old HP multi-function B&W laser.

I do not "need" color but there has been times where I wished we had it.

What is everyone using? Is color worth the extra?

I need fax, scan, copy in one unit.

Casey

Re: Multi-function Color Laser

Why do you need to replace the existing one? Is it dying?

If not, keep it going and maybe buy a networkable colour laser to sit beside it. Colour lasers tend to have a higher operating cost because there are now 4 toner cartridges instead of just one.

If you do need one complete unit, there are a number of companies that make them. Depends on how much you are going to run through it though.

Color is nice, but as stated, it's expensive, and the color is a little bit off. Using Color HP LaserJet P4014n, HP 6p laser black, HP Laser Jet 4 black and some Epson color ink jets. I prefer the old black HP laser Jets, cheap toner (cheaper than ink jet cartridges), fast and extremely reliable.

Re: Multi-function Color Laser

We paid $300 to fix the old unit 3 months out of warranty. That was about 6 months ago, a new one would have been $600. I said, "Next time this thing needs work I am buying a new one". That time came today, it start sucking sheets sideways through the automatic document feeder. I can scan/fax one sheet at a time but it takes forever.

I would like color convenience for taking completed job pictures with me to prospects houses. Right now I am stopping somewhere on the way to get them printed.

Currently looking at:
HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP

Colour lasers are great for printing reports with charts and graphs and logos. They are not always that great for printing pictures.

If you are going to print pictures, get an ink-jet with some nice paper.

Then get a nice black and white MFD printer.

In a previous life I serviced fax machines for a living, and that was by far the most common problem. Assuming you've already checked for any sort of junk in the feed path, you might want to try dampening a paper towel with some Fantastic or Formula 409 and cleaning all the rollers (and flat separation pad, if there is one).

Sometimes that'll get you a few more weeks/months before actually replacing anything.

Re: Multi-function Color Laser

I'm on my 3rd Lexmark colour printer/scanner/copier. I paid $85.00 for the first one new 3 years ago. after 8 months, it died. I called Lexmark, and they sent out a brand new one in a box, with cartirdges. New cartidges(it takes 2: black and white, and colour) cost $60 for a pair.
Earlier this year, the second one died. It was out of Warranty. I went to the local Staples (Business Depot) and bought a new LExmark: same basic model, but upgraded with new software and a chrome switch panel). I paid $45.00, with cartridges.
It sits on my deck: very convenient. Why would I ever want to fix it. I could buy a new one every time I need cartridges, and actually save money!

In my main office, we have a larger HP. Cost $500 originally. It dies earlier this year, out of warranty.
HP wanted $200 to fix it. Then they offered me the successor model, $280 shipped, with cartridges, exchange. We took it. Since tax was included, that was cheaper than having the old one fixed. They sent the wrong model, then replaced it with a French language one, then finally got us the correct one. We still have the french language one, which they never picked up.

Most of the new machines I've come across in the past come with 'starter' cartridges, which give a much smaller yield.
