More ?'s About Tablet Pc's

Can you open a spreadsheet app and simply 'write in' text and values in the spreadsheet cells? If so, is it that easy and does it work flawlessly?

I'm thinking tablet technology is the way to go for takeoffs and estimates if the character recognition software is 'all that'. Having one hand free to turn blueprint pages while the other 'writes in' values to a spreadsheet form is just where I want to go. Does a tablet pc get me there?

Re: More ?'s About Tablet Pc's

Just got my tablet out of the box, using the pen and the handwriting recognition softwave to reply to this message.You'11 see it with mistakes as E write This. One thing if it can recognize my handwriting it can recognize any ones! It is supposed to learn and get better as you use it.

I've only got about 30 min of experience so far but so far I'm seeing that you can do what you are askingmaybe not exactly as you are thinking, the tablet software recognizes any tine you ave in a place where type can be entered and gives you 3 options to enter the data. It isn't as simple as just writing and seeing it appear in the box you are given a intermediate writing box opens first and you write in that and then hit " insert" to put it in the box.

But it is very fast, it sounds harder than it is. What is Suprising to me is the software can regognize cursive whand writing seemingly as easy as printing writing.

I'm very impressed so far, I can see an amazing potential.

One of the builders I work for was showing off his slate computer.

It is like the tablet but does not have the hinged portion with keyboard.
He used it to send an email with his cell phone acting as the modem.

Hand writing recognition was perfect for him,(he had it for a couple weeks so I guess it learned his writing style).

The one he had was made by Motion and was quite impressive.

Try the "voice thing", you can talk to it, have it open programs and type for you, takes about 1/2 hour to "train it".

Re: More ?'s About Tablet Pc's

I have a gateway tablet which admittedly isnt the top of the line. But I would say it works great for 99% of what I need to do. Takeoff have been tricky but writing in numbers and whatnot is a snap. Plus, its great for meetings and other crap because you can scribble down stuff and turn it into text pretty reliably for change orders and the like. My only regret is weight and that it isnt a tough book model so I tend to gaurd it out on the job. I did get a digital pen however that lets me write places other than the screen. Its a big help for sure and a usefull accessory.

Oh and the voice thing I gave up on. I always seem to have too much noise in the background. They work pretty well in a nice quiet room, but other than that, not so much. Unless someone knows of me doing something very wrong.
