Microsoft Word Takes 2 Tries To Open A Document?

Anybody know why it takes my Microsoft Word two tries to open a document?

When I double click on a document name to open it, Word opens but not the document itself.

I close word and double click on the document again and this time word opens and the document opens?

Re: Microsoft Word Takes 2 Tries To Open A Document?

It's because Microsoft sucks. I have a similar but different problem, when I open a document, Word says this (see pic below), I think it's because I have an older version of MS Office ('97 version) installed on a newer OS (XP), my solution is to bitch about it and keep using it.

If you have the install disc, try to reinstall and choose "Repair".

Try opening word first - then the document, either from "File>Open" or a double click on the doc.

I do not have this issue using Office '97 and XP.

What is your OS?

This sounds like a problem with the default behavior selected
when you double click the file. You can see the default by
r-clicking on the file in Windows Explorer and seeing what
action is in bold, and/or at the top of the list of actions.
It should be 'Open', but your description makes it sound like
you may find 'New' emboldened or at the top of the list, which
would open the program, but not the file.

If this is the case, you can resolve it by going, in Windows
Explorer, to Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types, and
finding the entry for doc files and your flash extension.
Then, e.g., select doc, click on the Advanced button, and
note which, if any action is emboldened. Whatever it is,
select 'Open' and click on the Set Default to make it bold.

Now when you r-click the file in Windows Explorer, it should
show 'Open' at the top of the list, in bold, and d-clicking
it should open the file in Word.

In a worst-case scenario, you may find that 'Open' is not
listed among the options at all, in which case you will need
to add it. If this is the case, let me know, and we'll go
from there.

It opens fine that way, however I don't work that way, I navigate my files with windows explorer. I'm running XP professinal and Office 97.

Does anything show up in Event Viewer - if so run a search on that

If nothing is there, I would try reinstalling the latest Service Pack from Office, then the latest Service Pack for XP if that doesn't work
