Lost Bookmarks Before

I had a problem and lost all my bookmarks once. How can you make a copy of all them so if this ever happens again I can get them all back. All help appreciated.

Re: Lost Bookmarks Before

Depending on what browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Netscape, etc) and platform(PC or MAC) you're using, you can find your bookmarks in a file on your hard drive named bookmarks.htm. Sometimes it's called bookmarks.html. If you do a search on your hard drive for "bookmarks" - it will bring up a list of all the files w/ that word in their name.

Once you've located the file, make a note of the path. That is, figure out what folder it's located in and where that folder is on your hard drive. You can make a copy of that "bookmarks.htm" file to another part of your hard drive, to an external hard drive, to a USB flash drive or pretty much whatever.

If you "lose" your bookmarks again, you can go back to that file you copied and copy it back into the place it was originally found. As you add bookmarks, it would be a good idea to go through this process again to save the updated bookmarks file.

Re: Lost Bookmarks Before

Welcome from another old guy.
After my last hard drive melted
I'm buying those USB memory
stick thingies (hope that's not
too technical)
for all of the stuff
that I was too dumb to back up before.
I never knew I could loose the entire
hard drive like that, and I had
no idea how expensive it is
to have it read and recovered.

You can, with ALL browsers, export and save yer bookmarks to a text/html file.

Firefox, which you SHOULD be using, click "Bookmarks", click "Organize Bookmarks", click "Import and Backup". Click "export HTML". Export/save to your desktop and then you can move it anywhere.

Re: Lost Bookmarks Before

In XP and for IE, go to
My Documents
There is a folder called Favorites that has a star icon

Backup that folder somewhere, somehow, sometime
To another drive, USB stick, CD, another PC, E-mail it to Yahoo or whatever as an attachment. Mine is large but only 765Kb so it's easy to backup.

Re: Lost Bookmarks Before

There's an addon for Firefox called Foxmarks, which allows backup of your bookmarks file to a remote site. I recall the website was foxmarks.com
