Re: Internet Question
It's possible. That's why internet cafe's can be dangerous.

Re: Internet Question
well heres what i found out, my roomate clicked on his network list and found that the neighbors were running off his wireless router and if thats possible whats to keep anyone else from doing it. so eveything being done on the computer traces back to me because i have the main internet address we showed 3 extra computers sponging off his wireless router this ticks me off big time im not sure if my personal info was being compromised or not.

Re: Internet Question
Not knowing what wireless router you are using or what computer I can't tell you how but what you need to do is set a password for your connection. That way only people with the password can use your internet connection. Then when you go to connect to it and you are asked to set the network location select public location. If you select home then anyone using the connection can access your computer. But if you set it as a public location you can access the internet but no one can access your computer.
I'm sure it's not a 100% secure but it will make it much harder for anyone to get at your personal info. There should be info on how to do it in the book that came with the router. |

Re: Internet Question
I hope your PC is 'Password Protected' because there is software that you can install on a PC, and it keeps track of all keystrokes. In otherwords, if it was installed on your PC, he could get 'all' your passwords, read your email, etc without you even knowing it. Does he use your PC, do you logoff when you leave the house? Other then that, he would have to be pretty savy to hack into your PC just because you share an Internet connection.

Re: Internet Question
Setting a "password" on a router is PART of what needs to be done.
In the address bar of your browser, type in 192.168.1.1. This is the default IP address of your router (linksys and dlink, maybe others) (if it asks you for a user name and a password, leave the user blank and the password SHOULD be "admin"). Go into wireless then go in to wireless security. Select the type of security you want. (I use "wpa" personal and TKIP algorithms)Then set a pass code or passsword. (8 digits - must be hex code which are 0 thru 9 - "a" thru "f" - example 1f3c661a ). Save the settings.

Re: Internet QuestionQuote:
Sure enough, low signal and drop outs. Went to their bedroom where the DSL was hooked up. The modem was plugged, the router was plugged in, but no RG-45 cables ran to any device...totally unconnected. They were leaching the signal from the guy next door who hadn't set encryption up on his router. When they went to the far end of the house, they were out of range of the neighbors wireless router. They had no clue. Find the manual for your router and set up wireless encryption(download from the mfg. web site)..WEP or WAP. It will generate a key that you have to enter into the PC that needs to attach to the router. No key, no net. Here's a short primer. http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/fin...iconnectio.htm |
