Which Host And Why.

Taking the big plunge this weekend. Gunna get a website up and running, or at least buy the domain and set up shop for me TO BE ABLE to get the site functional.

What web host and why?

I have of course heard Godaddy.com and Hostmonster.com.. what others and why choose them?

What was the price, and are upgrades needed to get your site to function correctly? Were there templates available, can you tweak the templates if you wanted.. how user friendly is the host?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is hopefully gunna help in sales and notoriety. I would like my potential customers to see my company and what I am about before they even call me.

I would contact Tinner if I was you - he is a reseller for GoDaddy as I recall & he can walk you through the steps. Ordering from them is a headache, but their customer service is top notch.

If you want to build your own I suggest something like squarespace.com , you don't have to worry about hosting, learning html, different technologies etc. Just pay the small monthly fee, make and maintain your own site. (they have a free trial)

For hosting I use 1and1.com They are inexpensive and have been very reliable. The only issue I've had is canceling an account, you have to jump through a few hoops.

I'm currently have an issue with GoDaddy (returning bad headers) and am moving my accounts from them because of the non support.
The headers are something that the browser (and search engines) see to know about the page, not visible to a visitor. I call GoDaddy 3 times about this.
Each time their response
"Unfortunately we must reiterate that if the URLS in question are resolving without issue, but showing errors only when accessed from a third party website or search engine, this is going to be an issue with how the third party website is linking to your pages. You will need to contact the third party websites in question for further assistance as we cannot troubleshoot your issue. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

Yeah, because I wouldn't want some strange company like Google to be able to access my site, thanks.

In all fairness, I have other sites there without any issues, but if that's the response I'm going to get when there is an issue, I'm gone.

http://www.fatcow.com/ this is what I did. I got a year w/ privacy protection for $52.99. The templates are a little lame, but they give you ways to make your own. And yes it would be name@whateveryouwant.com. I can't wait to put my site on all my new stuff!! Oh yeah, and muh new email addy

I did 1and1.com for my site. Any time I had a problem or question I eamiled them and recieved help within a few hours. Usually resolving my issue. If I wanted to get immediate response I could call them. I did that twice and was helped on the spot by someone with a very thick accent, hard to understand but made it through and solved the issue.

I had loaded a very large file to my site and set it up for a friend to download. But the server wouldn't work right with the file, the extension wasn't something the server had seen before so it didn't know how to treat it. I emailed them and explained the problem, a few emails to answer questions and within an hour I had access to the file. Great service so far.

I use bluehost.com I like them for a few reasons:

The cost is only $6.95 per month... You do have to pay 12 months at a time. So today's charge if you buy is $83.40
You get a free domain name with sign-up.
They have a cpanel which makes a lot of things really easy, such as visitor tracking, installing blog software, setting up email addresses and many other things.
They have a 99.9% up-time.
Their customer service is great.

The name is $7.49. THe hosting can be as little as free, with an ad, or start at about $3.99 a month.

DO NOT POST THE NAMES YOU ARE LOOOKING FOR ONLINE ANYWHERE!!!!!!!

Domainers search for posts like this and reg the names to resell to endusers every minute of the day!

Put the names on notepad.
Leave OFF the .com, .net extensions.
Go to your registrar when you want to buy.
Look around for register domains, and find the drop down menu and select "Bulk Register", or something similar.
C &P your list there and select your extension, then enter any code needed.
Register ALL that are available! There is usually a discount offered too.
Use the shortest one for your site and 301 all the others for SEO purposes.
Examples: Type in A1roofer.com and/or slateroofspecialist.com to see what I mean by type in traffic and SEO.

You can host anywhere. Get your name for 5-10 year intervals. You're not planning on closing the doors in one year, are you?

no I don't. More than anything I wanted to get online. This will give me the chance to figure out what I will need to do. I know almost nothing about websites and SEO and all that jazz. I am working on a couple proposals right now, will be on again later. I'll hit you up then.

DO NOT let anyone register the domain name other than yourself.

Anyone else can leverage your domain in the future and the last thing you want to do is dispute who owns it.

I use godaddy, reason being, godaddy has a control panal that allows you to upload as many files required to hold the site. You have SSL (secure socket layer) allowing you to accept payments for job on your site by using direct links.

GoDaddy is the way because their tech support is up to par.

I used to be a web designer and now I am an AutoCAD designer and contractor as well.

GoDaddy lets you register your domain there and park others on your domain
they also offer ecommerce software which you have to pay for.

Is the purpose of the site advertising or information about your company?

Ask yourself this and then you will know what size in megabytes to get for your hosting.

My instinct tells me that most viewers will first thing of hosting as it relates to a website, and that will be the most common reason.

But in the event you are thinking about hosting more than a website and email, and simply replacing your servers all together via an outside source, then I would like to recommend two additional companies.

http://www.rackspace.com/index.php is a higher end company that I would suggest to any larger company, with an office staff, that requires nothing other than the premium in uptime, support and is willing to pay a few extra bucks for it.

http://www.maximumasp.com/ is for smaller companies, more from a price perspective which is usually the driving factor for smaller firms. Maximum can also handle larger companies.

If you compare rackspace and maximum for the same exact item, rackspace will always be more expensive since they place the value along with their fanatical support, and I must admit it is rather advanced, and in most cases overkill for the traditional environment of a contractor.

Before using any of these firms, I would suggest ensuring you understand the basics of what you want to do since there are general assumptions that come up during casual sales and support conversations.
