Re: Great Accounting Program For ContractorsHey JT,
This looks OK, but it seems that you are referring to a Windows product. I noticed that they have listings and pricing for a web-based version, but it seems (based on the webpage I visited today) that they have found out that converting an existing solution to the Internet is not easy. As you can see, they have one area of the site indicating that a web-version will be available in early May 2008, then another area of the site indicating it will be availble in early 2009. So basically a year of delays. From personal experience, I have learned that companies can either be a good Windows based product, or a good Internet based product ... but rarely both since they are completely different technologies that build the product. Could you please confirm that the product you were reviewing was the Windows version? As you know, I favor just Internet based technologies due to the many reasons that Opis is promoting, but it seems that they are not there yet. Phil |

Yes, i have only tested the windows based product and found that to be a pretty stable and easy product to work with.... i know you like the internet based programs, I'm just the oposite.
To each is to own....Take care. |

Re: Great Accounting Program For Contractors
Hmm, good find....I have never heard of this program, but I installed their trial and it looks pretty comprehensive.
I asked this question in the accounting section, but I didn't really get this info I was looking for, so I'll try here (sorry for the double-post, please don't take away my license). It seems that I can purchase Quickbooks or around $500 (or more with payroll) or I can purchase Master Builder or FoundationSoft, etc for $5k to $10k. There's really no in between.... Does anyone use one of the more expensive products that can shed some light as to why I would want to do the same because $500 is a whole lot cheaper than $10k!!! Thanks! |

I have used both and have seen and know people (as well as the owner) who uses Foundation. The more expensive programs have more modules and more features. They also will not let you change accounting entries as easy as QB does providing a strong audit trail, although you can set up QB to be more secure than most people do.
Example: Both Master Builder and Foundation have equipment cost tracking capabilities, you can charge the equipment to the job, track the cost of your equipment, post depreciation automatically and at any time see if your equipment is costing or making you money. They both have integrated estimating and scheduling modules. AIA billings can be printed on the pre-printed forms. Payroll can produce certified payroll reports. Master Builder has a service receivable or work order module with a dispatch board and work orders and service agreements as well as tracking your customers equipment, Foundation may have that as well. Look at American Contractor too....www.maxwellsystems.com What are you using now? Can't hurt to start with QB and move up later. You wouldn't have lost much if it's set up correctly. Most failures with software implementations are that companies are not set up correctly and not trained to use it or (as many on this site say) instead of trained, they don't take the time to learn it or set it up correctly. Do it yourself or get help, either way, it takes time and time is money. Last edited by Sarah9910; 08-21-2008 at 12:43 PM. |
