Dsl

I just found out the phone company is going to be raising my price for dialup from 9.95 to 15.95. I can get DSL through them for 14.99. So i'm going to do that. My question do i need to put a filter on the other phones in my house. Or will they still work without filter. I found the filters on the web and they look pretty simple. Just plug one end into phone jack and then plug your phone into that. I don't plan on running a phone off of the computer.

Re: Dsl

My DSL company gave me 5 filters with the modem kit, used them as instructed, but I had 2 phones that didn't have them and they worked just fine for over 2 years (garage and basement). Ended up getting one of those cordless systems where you plug in the main set and all the satellites operate off of that one, so I only had to filter the main one in from there, the one in the garage is still on it with no problems (it's a wall mount), so I guess you can try it and see.

I made the switch from dial up this summer, love it. My phone co gave me filters for all phones, don't forget the phone line if you have satellite tv.

Someone in the world does not yet have DSL (or cable)?? Holy crap I thought everyone had high speed.

They gave me a few filters and I put them on so I dont know if it works without. I would bet that you will get a few with your modem.

• 47% of all adult Americans have a broadband connection at home as of early
2007, a five percentage point increase from early 2006.
• Among individuals who use the internet at home, 70% have a broadband
connection while 23% use dialup.

I will give credit where credit is due. I think greenbay is the team to beat in the NFC Central. The team who i like to win it all this season is New England.

Ps. i'm going to change that to a bulls pic i have to find one.

I'm not home much so thats why i just have dialup and the price is was rite. 95% of time I'm on laptop. But now it will be cheaper to go DSL. So thats what i'm going to do. Unfortunately its my understanding that dsl isn't as easy to get up and running as dialup. Something about modem and getting it configured correctly. I'm hoping that will be a piece of cake.

Re: Dsl

It's best to put filters on all the phones and other devices that plug into the phone line. Only the modem should be unfiltered. You can get more filters at places like RadioShack fairly cheap. The phone company usually provides all you need if they do the installation.

DSL in my opinion is easier to set up that Dial-up. Plug the modem in the wall phone line, plug it's power cord in and let it boot up. Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the Ethernet port on your PC. Make sure your internet options are set to "never dial a connection" and reboot the PC. Viola, you should be online. Now if you are going to be using a router that's a whole different story. There are a lot of options to configure there for security, especially if you are using any wireless connections.

Re: Dsl

I've heard that the dsl filters are necessary for all other phone jacks that are in use.

Re: Dsl

We had problems without the filters on the wall mount phones, we'd lose the internet connection when we got incoming calls on them. My fix was to put one filter on the entire line for the house (no problems since), if you have one of these type of interface boxes (see pics below) it's real easy to add. If you add the filter to the line in the interface box you have to run a pair (or use an existing extra pair (usually already there)), from the interface box to a phone jack, prior to the filter for the DSL modem. The only problem with getting high speed internet is you can never go back to a 56 k modem, it's too slow. If you don't have that type of interface box you could do something similar inside with a couple of jacks (3 of them).

Re: Dsl

Heres what i'm getting. Basic at&t yahoo dsl through my phone company for 10.00 a month plus a 49.95 rebate on the modem. So the modem will eventually be free. I consider that to be a good deal.

Re: Dsl

I haven't seen a DSL company around the area that actually charges you for a modem. Usually they are just on lend from the provider (at no cost unless it has a router built in too).

Yes, you will need a filter for every phone, unless they are the cordless that have multiple bases with one main base. You can easily put a filter on a wall mount phone, either behind the plate, or let it hang down through the bottom of the phone.

Re: Dsl

You don't need filters. With DSL the bandwidth is divided into 3 channels, the POTS channel, DSL Down and DSL Up. The filter only allows frequencies below 4000 Hz through to your telephone. The DSL frequencies are much higher. Your phone can't possibly hear them anyway.

I have cable now, and its the best connection I have ever had. (Comcast)
When I had DSL, which I thought worked very well, all my phones had the filters. 4 phones. Filters came with the modem kit. My phones would not work without the filters.

We forgot the filter one phone at work when we set up DSL. When I picked up the receiver I got an ear full of whistles and buzzing. I could certainly hear something!

Somehow it scares me that a professional pilot can't afford hi-speed access somewhere.
